Vintage Rolex Chronograph 6234

Vintage Rolex Chronograph 6234

The Rolex Oyster Chronograph Reference 6234 is often considered the grandfather of the Rolex Daytona. Produced from 1955 to 1961, it offers many of the same features as the Daytona, but lacks much of its technological innovation. For example, reference 6234 utilizes Rolex Caliber 72 with 17 jewels and column wheel construction. Thus, reference 6234 lacks an automatic movement, as the Daytona possesses. Rather than automatically winding with the flick of the wrist, reference 6234 must be manually wound.

During its 6 year production run, Rolex produced around 500 reference 6234′s per year, averaging at a full production number of about 2300 stainless steel models and less than 150 14k and 18k gold models. The dial was also varying in design, with some watches featuring a white dial while others featured a black dial. Each dial features applied dagger numerals with luminous accents and luminous hands. Each timepiece is also signed by Rolex on the dial and case.

Movement Rolex Chronograph 6234

Movement Rolex Chronograph 6234

The three sub dials featured on the main dial also varied between some pieces. The three sub dials offer a constant seconds counter at 9 o’clock, a 30 minute counter at 3 o’clock, and a 12 hour counter at 6 o’clock. These sub dials allow the wearer to simultaneously measure speed and distance. Reference 6234 also features a tachometer scale on the outer ring and a telemeter scale for distances on the inner ring. The timepiece is topped with a plastic crystal, rather than the later synthetic sapphire crystal. Each watch is also typically finished off with an oyster riveted bracelet. Depending on the watch finish or later alteration the oyster bracelet could be made of stainless steel, 14k gold, 18k gold, or leather.

Some similarities between the later Daytona and reference 6234 include the utilization of Rolex’s patented oyster case, which can withstand water pressure and remain waterproof up to 200 meters. The oyster case maintains its water resistance through the use of three components; bezel, case body, and screw down case back. The Oyster crown is set at the 3 o’clock mark and is flanked by twin round pushers, giving the watch a sporty look. Though not a Daytona feature, a surprising technically innovative feature of reference 6234 is its magnetic resistance, which aids in maintaining the timepiece’s precision and accuracy.

As the forerunner of the Rolex Daytona, the Rolex Chronograph 6234 is one of the most prized vintage Rolex watches. While it does not offer the convenience of automatic winding, it does offer many wonderful features Rolex eventually incorporated into their later models. The Rolex Chronograph 6234 is a must have piece for any Rolex collection, not only as a wonderful example of Rolex history, but as a vintage, yet extremely wearable watch.

Outside Baselworld 2014

The eight day Baselworld 2014 event is being praised as a great success, bringing together 150,000 attendees including representatives from exhibiting companies, buyers, journalists, and visitors. The many sectors represented include watchmaking, jewelry, diamonds, gemstones, pearls, machines, and supply industries. Jacques J. Duchene, President of the Exhibitors’ Committee, stated, “we are extremely satisfied with this year’s Baselworld…Baselworld is and remains the unmissable show for the watch and jewelry industry.” Though showcasing trade, Baselworld is more than a trade show. Baselworld was described by one attendee as “that moment in time that determines the future. In the course of one week, we unveil our novelties to business partners and to the press of the whole world; possibly one of the most intimate exercises of a brand, the creation. In return, we feel the emotions that our creations evoke.”

Around 1500 exhibitors, comprised of leading brands from over 40 countries, showcased their latest innovations and creations, and were met with enthusiasm by visitors. 95 percent of the Swiss watchmaking industry was represented at Baselworld 2014, including Rolex.

Basel World 2014 Cellini Collection

Basel World 2014 Cellini Collection

Rolex released several new items at Baselworld 2014, including the new Cellini Collection. The Cellini Collection includes three new models; the Cellini Time, Cellini Date, and Cellini Dual Time. The Cellini collection is described as “a contemporary celebration of classicism and the eternal elegance of traditional timepieces.” Taking inspiration from the Italian Renaissance, Rolex named the collection after Benvenuto Cellini, goldsmith and sculptor to Renaissance popes. This inspiration shows in the refined and classic lines and luxurious finishes. Inside, however, the watch is completely modern, utilizing a high-precision self-winding mechanical movement, certified as a chronometer and entirely manufactured by Rolex.

Rolex also released new Oyster Models including the new GMT-Master II, the Sea-Dweller 4000, the Oyster Perpetual Skydweller, the Datejust Pearlmaster 34, the Cosmograph Daytona, the Milgauss, and the Rolex Oyster Perpetual. The new GMT-Master II was of particular interest, displaying a red and blue Cerachrom bezel insert, which echos the first GMT-Master bezel of 1955.

With representatives from every continent, Baselworld 2014 is certainly the most important marketplace and trend-setting event for the world’s watch and jewelry industry. According to Francois Thiebaud, President of the Swiss Exhibitors’ Committee, Baselworld “2014 has confirmed the excellence and global prestige of Baselworld…[it is] one of a kind: the combination of luxury, innovation and outstanding expertise are the major strengths of the watch and jewelry industry and related sectors.” Thus, it is no surprise this event is where Rolex chose to unveil its latest 2014 watch collections.

Life Magazine Featuring Dwight Eisenhower & his Rolex President Watch

President Dwight Eisenhower’s 18k gold Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust Chronometer on a Jubilee bracelet, given to him by Rolex for his heroic leadership role in the planning and implementation of D-Day, is going up for auction. This is the first time the historic watch has been up for auction, and is expected to sell for an estimated $1 million.

The end of World War II was celebrated world-wide. To show their appreciation to the Allies, Rolex commissioned two gold watches, presenting one to Eisenhower, who led US troops, and one to Winston Churchill, who led Great Britain’s forces, for their heroic leadership during the war. The 18k gold watch was presented to Eisenhower in 1951, then a five-star general.

Eisenhower’s gold Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust chronometer is one of the most famous individual pieces ever made by the Swiss company, and the 150,000th 18K gold watch the company ever made. The 100,000th had been presented to Churchill.

dwight eisenhower rolex watch

Dwight Eisenhower Rolex Watch

When Eisenhower was president, he regularly wore the special watch. It can even be seen in his official portraits, including the one which appeared on the cover of Life magazine in 1952. When Eisenhower died in 1969, he left the Rolex timepiece to his Army colleague, White House staff member, and longtime friend, Sgt John Moaney. Moaney continued to work for the Eisenhower family, keeping the watch for ten more years. Moaney then passed the watch to his wife after his death.

The watch remained in Moaney’s widow’s possession for years before she sold it to Raleign DeGeer Amyx three decades ago. DeGeer Amyx, former FBI and well-known presidential memorabilia collector, kept the timepiece until the present. The watch quickly became the crown jewel of DeGeer Amyx’s large presidential memorabilia collection.

DeGeer Amyx, now 76, can no longer maintain the size of his presidential memorabilia collection and has decided to auction it off. The auction will take place on September 17 in Boston, Massachusetts. The auction will include several items owned by President Eisenhower, including Eisenhower’s Second World War brown leather flight jacket, a pair of binoculars, and an Eisenhower painting. However, Eisenhower’s gold Rolex will be the prize piece of the auction.

Bobby Livingston, executive vice president of RR Auction, estimates the watch will sell for $1 million dollars. No matter the price, the watch’s appearance has made a big stir in the Rolex collectors’ community. According to Livingston, many “experts think it is the most important Rolex watch ever made.”

Rolex 18k White gold 116619 Submariner

Rolex 18k White gold 116619 Submariner

The Baselworld Event always sparks wide interest in the watch community. Baselworld 2008 was no different, though the Rolex community was particularly abuzz. Along with 2008 being the 100 year anniversary of the founding of the Rolex company, Rolex also made some fairly significant announcements and released several new watch designs. Among the new releases, Rolex quietly and unexpectedly debuted three all-gold Rolex Submariner models. What made these new Submariners unique and exciting was the fact that they were not variants of existing Submariner models. Rather, they were completely re-designed watches.

blue submariner 116619 watch

The new all-gold Submariners, including the white gold model with reference 116619, exhibited many of the same enhancements and upgrades as the highly anticipated Anniversary GMT models. The lugs and the crown guards on the 116619 share the same expanded design also the 50th Anniversary GMT. Because the lugs and guards are larger, the Submariner appears overall larger on the wrist, though the dial remained the same 40mm measurement as in previous Submariner models.

18k White Gold Rolex Submariner Watch

18k White Gold Rolex Submariner Watch

Other features helped the 116619 remain uniquely Submariner. For example, the Cerachrom bezel, made of an extremely hard and highly scratch resistant ceramic, strikingly resembles the classic Submariner bezel style. The 18k white gold case of the Submariner 116619 was not increased in size to accommodate higher water resistance. Rather, the Submariner 116619 remained at the same water resistant level of 300m as the previous model.

18k White Gold Blue Submariner

18k White Gold Blue Submariner

The Submariner 116619’s dial raised many eyebrows when first revealed. Its striking robin egg blue color was a surprising choice for the watch. However, the color compliments the white-gold beautifully. The dial also features larger markers and hands, first seen on the Rolex Yacht-Master. The hands have also been lumed, which glows a beautiful and complimentary blue.

The bracelet and clasp of the 116619 Submariner were also upgraded. Matching the 18k white gold of the case, the Submariner 116619’s white gold Oyster bracelet features solid, highly polished center links. A new Glidelock clasp was introduced on this watch, upgraded to require no tools to adjust the bracelet to the clasp, making it far more functional than previous models.

Rolex did not stop its upgrades to the new Submariner 116619 on the outside. Inside, the 116619 uses the 31 jewel Rolex caliber 3135. The movement oscillates at 28,800 beats per hour and has been COSC tested and certified. However, a slight adjustment was made to the tried-and-true caliber 3135 of the 116619. The caliber is fitted with a new “Parachrom Blue” hairspring, specially designed to be almost completely anti-magnetic as well as highly shock and temperature resistant. This greatly aids in maintain the precision of the timepiece, giving it the reputation as one of the most reliable watch movements.

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner reference 116619 is a very valuable collector’s piece, valued at around $29,850. Not only are its white gold case and blue dial aesthetically pleasing, but the technical specifications of the Submariner 116619 were greatly improved. With models such as the 116619, it is not surprise that the Submariner line will continue to shine as the epitome of a luxury diver’s watch.

World Cup 2014 Stadiums

This year, the world celebrates the 20th FIFA World Cup, a tournament for the men’s world football (soccer for Americans) championship. The 2014 FIFA World Cup is currently being held in Brazil, beginning on June 12th and concluding on July 13th. Brazil has held the FIFA World Cup once previously, in 1950. Brazil is playing host in a magnificent way with twelve beautiful venues, seven of them new and five renovated, for the FIFA World Cup.

2014 Brasil Soccer World Cup

2014 Brazil Soccer World Cup

Consisting of 32 national teams from countries all over the world, a total of 64 matches will be played in 12 various cities throughout Brazil. After qualifying, these 32 teams, consisting of world champion teams like Argentina, England, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Uruguay, will play each other for the title.

Once qualified, each team was split into a group, ranging from A-H. These groups are comprised of the seven highest ranking teams joining host team Brazil in the seeded pot. The remaining groups were divided based on geographic considerations. The resulting arrangement has four equal groups, or “pots,” of eight teams. Each team consists of 23 players. After each initial round-robin match, the two best teams in each group will continue to the “knockout stage.” Currently, the event remains in the first stage, with the knockout stage beginning on June 28th.

The defending champion from the last FIFA World Cup in 2010 is Spain. They won after defeating the Netherlands 1-0. Despite this victory last year, the Netherlands rose again, crushing Spain in their first 2014 game with a final score of 1-5.

New technologies are being used for the first time at the World Cup. These new technologies include goal-line technology, a method for determining when the ball has completely crossed the goal line with the assistance of electronic devices, as well as vanishing foam for free kicks. FIFA President Sepp Blatter said “it would be nonsense not to reopen the file on goal-line technology” after England was wrongly denied a goal against Germany at the last World Cup.

Vintage of the Week: Rolex Red Submariner 1680

Rolex Vintage Red Submariner

Rolex Vintage Red Submariner

The Rolex Submariner 1680, fondly nicknamed the “Red Submariner,” is a rare and highly prized Rolex model. Perhaps the most distinctive and valuable feature of the Red Submariner is the red writing on its dial. Produced from 1969 to 1979, a small batch of the Submariner 1680s featured the name “Submariner” written in red as opposed to the normal white. Red writing on Rolex watches has become highly valued and sought after by collectors. The Double Red SeaDweller, for example, is often times triple the price of similar models with white writing. Thus, the single red line of writing on the Red Submariner 1680 makes the watch much more rare and thus worth much more.

Vintage Red Sub 1680

Vintage Red Sub 1680

The Red Submariner is also a rarer model because it is the first Submariner to feature a date window as well as the cyclops lens above it. The watch’s crystal was also modified from other Submariner crystals, standing 3mm above the case and bezel. This unique feature makes this particular model recognizable.

Movement Vintage Red Sub 1680

Movement Vintage Red Sub 1680

The Red Submariner 1680 features the 1575 Chronometer movement, which is essentially the same as movement 1570, only with the additional date feature. Like other Rolex watches of the time, the Red Submariner 1680 has a depth rating of 200 meters (600 feet).

Dial of Red Rolex Submariner

Dial of Red Rolex Submariner

The Red Submariner 1680 was produced with seven different dial versions that have been consistently recognized by Rolex collectors. They are titled Mark I-VIII, with Mark II and III being produced simultaneous, and thus hard to differentiate. Some Red Submariner 1680s feature a rare brown dial variant. The brown dial most likely spawned from a manufacturing flaw. This flaw is now highly sought after by collectors, as so few brown dials now exist. The brown dial Submariners are generally only found in watches with Mark II & Mark III dials and case numbers in the 2.2M or 2.3M ranges.

Stainless Steel Rolex Submariner 1680

Stainless Steel Rolex Submariner 1680

The Red Submariner was a first in many ways. The Red Submariner 1680 is not only the first Submariner to feature the date window and cyclops lens, it also sports the highly sought after red writing. While other Rolex models, such as the Double Red SeaDweller, are widely known due to their high value by collectors, their smaller red counterparts, like the Rolex Red Submariner, are also highly valued. For the more conservative collector, the Red Submariner 1680 is a more affordable, yet still rare and aesthetically pleasing “red” Rolex.

Vintage Rolex 2 Tone GMT 1675

The GMT Master is one of Rolex’s most iconic watches. With its long run, Rolex has continually improved its look and features, offering extremely successful GMT references, such as Reference 1675. Produced from 1959 until 1980, Ref 1675 saw a few minor alterations during its long run. Initially available in stainless steel, Ref 1675’s case measured 40mm in diameter, and, by 1965, featured pointed crown guards with a chapter ring dial. From about 1959 to 1964, the stainless steel case encompassed Rolex’s caliber 1565 movement. By 1965 this movement was replaced by caliber 1575. Some GMT Master 1675s feature caliber 1570 as well as 1565, though caliber 1575 is the most common. The case, as common with Rolex watches, is water proof up to 50 meters (165 feet). Hacking was introduced to the movement in 1971.

Vintage Two Tone GMT 1675 Movement & Case Back

Other alterations included additional finishes and substitutions. Beginning in 1968, customers could choose a Jubilee 62510 bracelet over the original Oyster 78360 bracelet. Gilt dials were another popular addition, as well as custom logos, such as The Oman Marine Ministry or Tiffany & Co. The GMT Master Ref 1675 was also the first GMT to be available in gold. This was, perhaps, the most striking alteration.

Vintage Bezel Two Tone GMT 1675

Vintage Bezel Two Tone GMT 1675

From 1959 to 1964 the GMT Master Ref 1675 featured a white gloss dial. From 1965 until the end of production in 1980, Ref 1675 featured a Matt dial with white printing. The dial featured Tritium indexes as well as the new in-print of “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified.” The dial and case are topped with an acrylic crystal.

Crown Vintage Rolex 2 Tone GMT 1675

Crown Vintage Rolex 2 Tone GMT 1675

The GMT Master Reference 1675 is a highly sought after vintage Rolex, thanks in large part to its unique bezel options. Though available in a muted black, the most popular bezel inlay is probably the “Pepsi” color combination of red and blue. Eventually, Rolex released a “Coke” combination of red and black. However, the red of the Coke bezel appears slightly darker when compared to the Pepsi red.

Vintage Rolex 1675 GMT Crown

Because the Rolex GMT Master 1675 was produced for such a long time, it is one of the easier vintage Rolex watches for collectors to acquire. However, not all Ref 1675s are equal. Those that are older and feature rarer bezels will certainly be worth more. However, for those who are wishing to begin their vintage Rolex collection, the GMT Master 1675 is certainly a great place to start.

Rolex Oyster Chronograph Ref. 6034 owned by Eric Clapton

This Rolex Ref 6034, a “pre-Daytona” chronograph in pink gold, was once owned by legendary musician — and watch collector — Eric Clapton.  And it will hit the auction block just 3 days from now, in Auctionata’s “Patek Philippe and Rolex Only” online sale. The last timepiece I featured from the collection of Eric Clapton was his super-rare and highly coveted platinum Patek Ref 2499. It sold for a whopping $3.6 million in 2012 Patek Ref 2499. The opening bid on this Rolex Oyster Chronograph Ref 6034 is set at € 50,000, but the final result could easily surpass this figure and reach into six figures if the right bidders show up. This Rolex Ref 6034 does not have the elite status of a platinum Patek 2499, but it is still a very special watch, in superb condition, with great provenance. A wonderful piece for the passionate and deep-pocketed Rolex collector.

The Little Watch That Could – A Rolex Explorer 1016 With An Interesting Story To Tell

Vintage Explorer Watch Reference 1016

Vintage Explorer Watch Reference 1016

The Rolex Explorer is easily one of Rolex’s most recognizable models; not for its extremely luxurious design or features, but because of its tool-like watch design and abilities. Originally descended from the forerunner of the “Explorer” model worn by the first party to climb Mt. Everest, the Rolex Explorer reference 1016, specifically, was the longest running of all Explorer models, produced from 1963 to 1989. Reference 1016 is a fairly simple design, featuring a black matte dial with off-white markers, screw down oyster case, and an increased water resistance level from 50 meters in the previous reference, to 100 meters.

Vintage Rolex Explorer 1016

Vintage Rolex Explorer 1016

This particular Explorer 1016 comes with its own, unique history which plays into the history of Rolex itself. George, the original owner of the watch, made his initial Rolex purchase in 1966. He was prompted to buy the watch, not for its luxurious association, but as a practical tool for his future. George was in his senior year of Cadet School at West Point and knew his military career was only beginning, thus he needed a timepiece that would keep accurate time and that could hold up in the most difficult terrains. He landed on a Rolex Explorer 1016 at the New York Cadet Store, and bought it for a whopping $86.65. This price was double the price of many other watches on the market at the time. However, George knew that in military operations you needed a reliable and durable timepiece. In addition to keeping accurate time, the watch’s radium dials allowed signaling, perfect for military operations. Being a perpetual motion watch, the Rolex did not require batteries. By simply wearing the watch, the gentle motions of the wrist would wind it. Though George knew the watch was expensive, he also knew he needed the best and most reliable timepiece on the market. Thus, to him, the reliable Rolex brand was worth the higher price.

George’s purchase followed him as he traveled around the world while serving in the army. It was worn on his wrist in Army Ranger School in the mountains of Georgia as well as the swamps of Florida. While in the 82nd Airborne Division, the watch traveled to Germany with him, where the two were stationed until 1966.

In 1967, George took his Rolex Explorer to Vietnam. While in Vietnam, George was stationed in the Delta where he experienced extremely hot and wet conditions. Not surprisingly, his Rolex Explorer 1016 easily withstood the varied and extreme conditions, just as George thought it would. George explained that he initially purchased the Rolex Explorer because he needed something that would keep accurate time and that could hold up in the most difficult terrains. Through George’s military experiences, he found that the Rolex Explorer 1016 did just that.

When George recently decided to have his Explorer 1016 serviced, he was surprised at the quoted $300 price as it was far more than he had initially paid nearly 50 years ago. Seeing how the watch’s value must have increased over time, George decided to bring his watch to Bob’s for an appraisal.

Though Rolex rarely officially collaborates on projects with outside companies, some individual dealers have customized particular Rolex watches and are offering them as unique pieces. To celebrate the 4th of July, we are offering a few stunning examples of patriotic Rolex watches. Each watch has been specially customized to represent the patriotic spirit of the United States of America.

Stamp’d LA Rolex Watch

Stampd Swisssignatures Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust Watch

Occasionally, dealers will customize Rolex watches before selling them, offering their own unique touch. Made of 18k white gold with a fluted bezel and Oyster bracelet, the “Rolex Stamp’d” watch is a rare treasure. Stamp’d LA in Los Angeles has worked closely with Swiss-Signatures, an official dealer for Rolex watches, to create an exclusive, unique, and limited edition version of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust watch. The watch features a monochromatic American flag over the entire face. Though subtly, it has a true air of patriotism and class. This rare watch has been limited to a total of ten worldwide and retails around $15,000 USD.

Bamford & Sons Black PVD Rolex Daytona

4th of July Rolex Daytona Watch

Bamford & Sons Rolex Daytona Watch

Bamford & Sons are another dealer who enjoy customizing Rolex watches. Their Bamford PVD Cosmograph Daytona Rolex ref. 116520 is a sleek, self-winding, perpetual motion, water resistant watch. Made of Rolex’s unbeatable stainless steel, the Bamford Rolex Daytona is PVD coated for extra protection.
Bamford & Sons are some of the first dealers to use PVD coating. The PVD coating adds a professional appearance to the timepiece and virtually eliminates any reflective glare. The case back is engraved with Bamford & Sons while the dial, case, and movement are signed by Rolex.

Highly customizable, Bamford & Sons initially released a stunning version of the Daytona ref. 116520 with a patriotic white, blue, and red striped dial. It sold for about $48,000 USD.

The Daytona line is one of Rolex’s most iconic set of watches. Revolutionary in its creation, the Daytona became the symbol of a true sportsman’s watch. The Daytona Oyster Paul Newman ref 6265, in particular, is an extremely rare Rolex Daytona model, and a dream collector’s piece.

Available in both gold and stainless steel, ref. 6265’s case measures about 37 mm. The case, improved for water resistance, features a screw back, large Oyster Twinlock 700 series winding crown, and two round screw down chronograph buttons in the band. Inside, the watch features the automatic mechanical caliber 727, rhodium-plated, 17 jewels movement. The movement also features straight-line lever escapement, monometallic balance adjusted to three positions, shock absorber, and a self-compensating Breguet balance spring. With the implementation of the screw-down push buttons and a larger winding crown, waterproofness for ref 6265 was improved from the 50 meters of previous models to 100 meters (330 ft).

The dial is one of the most important features of the “Daytona” line. Those that possess the coveted “Paul Newman” dial are worth far more than those with the regular Daytona dial. Both dial versions feature an inverse color scheme of white and black on the dial and subsidiary dials. The Daytona signature is in red above the middle subsidiary dial. The gold model uniquely features the “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” signature.

Square numerals with luminous accents are applied to the dial. An outer fifths of a second division appears in red on the Paul Newman dials and white on the normal dials. Three engine-turned subsidiary dials, displaying constant seconds, 30 minutes, and 12 hour registers, also appear on the lower half of the dial.

The bezel of ref 6265 was also improved from earlier models. The tachymeter scale was removed from the dial, where it had been located on previous models, and moved to the calibrated metal bezel. Its larger print and contrasting white or black color, depending on the metal finish, made it far more legible on the bezel than it had been on the dial. The watch was finished off with a matching Oyster bracelet and plexiglass crystal. Until about 1980, the Dayton ref 6263 featured a domed plexiglass crystal.

Daytona ref 6265 had a long run, and was produced in both the 1970s and 1980s. Now considered a vintage Rolex, especially those that were produced in the early part of its production run or that feature a “Paul Newman” dial, ref 6265 is a very valuable, reliable, and versatile timepiece to add to any Rolex collection.

Vintage Air King 1002

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual ref 1002 is an affordable vintage watch from a very popular period of Rolex watchmaking in the 1960s. As always, Rolex made a great effort with ref 1002 to create a long-lasting and quality timepiece. Perhaps not as flashy as some other Rolex models, the simple look of ref 1002 gives it a classic and timeless appearance, while its quality construction keeps it running smoothly and accurately for generations.

Movement Vintage Air King

Movement Vintage Air King Reference 1002

Rolex ref 1002 was produced in the late 1950s and through the 1960s. The timepiece originally featured a robust 26 jewel calibre 1560 automatic movement. Calibre 1560 possess a Rolex p/n 7980 balance assembly with a Breguet hairspring, running at 18000 bph. Some later Rolex ref 1002s feature the calibre 1570 automatic movement. Calibre 1570 was introduced in 1965 and has a balance assembly Rolex p/n 8106 with a Breguet hairspring, running at 19800 bph. The calibre 1570 automatic movement was very popular among both dress and sports Rolex models. Unfortunately, because of the movement’s popularity, many watches from the 1960s were taken apart and their movements removed and placed in other watches. Therefore, it is becoming increasingly hard to find watches, like ref 1002, unaltered.

The movement was held in a 34-36mm screw down Oyster case. The case was available in both stainless steel and either 14ct or 18ct gold. Each case was topped with a smooth bezel and a sapphire crystal.

The dial was either silver or gilt, typically depending on the finish of the case. Each dial was signed Rolex Oyster Perpetual, Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified. Topped with luminous index hands and sweep center seconds, the dial was finished with applied baton numeral markers.

Ref 1002’s master craftsmanship was intended to last for at least one generation. 40 plus years later, many Ref 1002s still remain. Ref 1002 is also a very reasonably priced vintage Rolex watch. Many in good working order sell anywhere from $900 to $3800 USD, depending on age, condition, movement, and metal finish. This affordable and varying price range makes ref 1002 a viable option for those who wish to enter the Rolex collectors’ market. It also makes ref 1002 an affordable watch to give as a gift, or an affordable vintage addition to any existing Rolex watch collection.

Submariner Reference 16610

Submariner Reference 16610

Rolex debuted the Submariner 16610 in 1988, replacing the Submariner 1680. With a clean and simple look, the Submariner appealed to a wide range of buyers. Its sporty yet elegant look made it versatile, easily transitioning from the office or the golf course to a nice dinner. Though a new model, only a few slight changes were made to the Submariner 16610 from the Submariner 1680, including the dial and crystal.

rolex submariner reference 16610

Rolex Submariner Reference 16610

Unlike the flat black dial of its predecessor, the Submariner 16610 features a glossy black dial. The dial was the first Submariner dial to feature Superluminova, making the dial more visible underwater and in the dark. Adding an elegant and expensive touch, the dial of Submariner 16610 offers applied luminous white gold markers. Luminous hands with sweep centre seconds also sit on the dial. The dial also features a date feature, near the 3 o’clock mark. As with many Rolex models, the Submariner offers a Rolex Oyster bracelet made of stainless steel, 18 ct gold, or a mix of the two. The case, dial and movement are signed.

Atop the case and dial, the Submariner 16610 features a calibrated aluminum bezel. This bezel was specially designed to rotate easily, with a single click-spring controlling the bezel’s rotation. The Submariner 16610 was topped with a new sapphire crystal, unlike the acrylic plastic crystal on the Submariner 1680. The crystal features a Cyclopse magnifier over the date window.

Because of its visual appeal, the Rolex Submariner 16610 can be worn as both a casual watch or dress watch. This versatility has made it a very popular Rolex model. Along with its versatility, the Submariner offers durability and strength. Originally design as a sports mans’ watch geared towards deep sea divers, the Submariner model offers advanced water resistant technology thanks to its specially designed Oyster case. The Oyster case offers a screw down case back and Triplock crown, preventing water from entering the case and destroying the movement up to 300m. The Oyster case of the Submariner 16610 is 40mm in diameter and is available in stainless steel or 18 ct gold. The waterproof case contains the timepiece’s automatically winding caliber 3135, 31 jewel movement. This movement is known for its precision and dependability.

After an impressive run, the Submariner 16610 was discontinued in favor of the new Submariner Date 116610. This particular reference offered a new, virtually scratch resistant “Cerachrom” bezel, and earned the nickname the “ceramic bezel” Submariner. Though the Submariner 16610 was replaced, it remains a favorite among collectors. This precise, dependable, and visually appealing model offers the versatility of both sport and evening wear, as well as the durability of a Submariner.

Bob’s Watches is back with another addition of What’s Hot & What’s Not. Pre-owned Rolex watch sales have been strong but some wristwatch models have been selling faster than others. If you’re curious which timepieces have been flying off the shelves and which have gone soft read on.

What’s Hot

Vintage Rolex President Gold Day Date 1803

Vintage Rolex President Day Date 1803

The release of the Rolex Day Date in the 1950s revived the look and feel of the timepiece. With two new features, including two windows showing the day and date, the watch became more complex with a larger caliber. To hold calibers 1556 and later 3055, the case was also enlarged, measuring about 36mm in width and 12mm in thickness, giving the watch a greater presence on the wrist.

The Day Date was a very popular Rolex model, and came to represent accomplishment. This is best demonstrated by its popularity among US presidents, including Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Raegan. This affiliation has led to it fondly being nicknamed the “President.” The “President” gold Day Date has long been a popular Rolex timepiece, and continues to be so.

The Rolex GMT Master II was produced from 1989 until 2007, and popularly featured three colorful aluminum inlays for the rotating bezel which could be rotated out, continuously giving the watch a new and fresh look. Collectors have given these colorful bezels nicknames, including “Coke” for the red and black bezel and “Pepsi” for the blue and red bezel. The bezel is also marked with a scale, allowing the wearer to set a different time zone than the dial, thus reading two time zones at once. Both the visual appeal and the features of the GMT Master II make this watch a versatile and useful choice for any Rolex collector.

The Datejust II maintains the tradition of the original Oyster Perpetual Datejust of the 1940s, but with better technological innovations. Unlike the original Datejust, the Datejust II offers a perpetual self-winding caliber 3136 movement. To increase its resistance to shock, Rolex developed Paraflex. This highly efficient shock absorber protects the timepiece’s sensitive interior components, increasing its shock resistance by up to 50 percent.

The DateJust II is also a visually stunning piece, made of steel or white gold with a crisp white dial and fluted bezel. Because its architecture is very similar to the original DateJust, the DateJust II maintains its timeless appeal, while still offering the wearer the technological advances of the modern age.

Rolex Launches a New Commemorative Deepsea with Blue Dial

Rolex Sea-Dweller Deepsea Blue

Rolex Sea-Dweller Deepsea Blue

Eagerly anticipate, Rolex revealed a new watch model on August 4, 2014 known as the Rolex Deepsea D-Blue Dial Edition. This new Oyster Perpetual watch was made to commemorate James Cameron’s historic solo dive to the bottom of the Mariana Trench.

The New Rolex Deepsea

The spirit of the Deepsea watch has always been one of exploration and pushing the limits of technological innovation. The Rolex Deepsea is a true diver’s watch. Rolex has created this particular timepiece to be water resistant to a depth of 3,900 metres (12,800 feet). Its wide case, at 44mm, carries the robust design needed to withstand such depths. The name “Deepsea” is derived from the successful 1960 experiment in which the Rolex Deep Sea Special travelled 10,916 meters to the deepest point in the ocean.

The Deep Sea is able to withstand such pressure through the use of a Ringlock System. This system utilizes three core components, which are made in the toughest aerospace‑grade materials available. A nitrogen-alloyed steel central ring is the main component of the system, and works in conjunction with a 5 mm thick domed sapphire crystal and a grade 5 titanium case back. The Rolex Deepsea is so powerful, it can withstand water pressure 100 times beyond the depth any human could.

Rolex has included an innovative Chromalight display on the Deepsea’s dial, which makes the watch far more visible in the deep depths of the ocean. The distinctive blue glow is guaranteed to last up to twice as long as standard luminescent material. A special capsule containing luminescent material is shaped into the form of a triangle to mark the zero marker.

Ever innovative at problem solving, Rolex has included a helium escape valve in the Deepsea models. After a long deep sea dive, professional divers must spend time in a decompression chamber where they breathe a gas mixture containing helium. This helium seeps into the watch, but is able to escape without damage through an escape valve. Even underwater, this valve can be utilized to release pressure without water entering and destroying the sensitive movement.

The dial seems to be the biggest change in this model, offering a blue to black transition from top to bottom. This color scheme imitates the color of the water as the diver descends, beginning with blue and ending in black darkens. This dial, along with the technological innovations of the watch, offer the wearer the perfect tool for deep sea diving.

Skydweller Wristwatch Reference 326939

Basel World 2012 had the Rolex community abuzz. It had been some time since Rolex had released a new model. With rumors of the release of a new watch named the “Sky Dweller,” collectors were in heavy debate over what type of watch it would be. As the most highly anticipated reveal at Basel World 2012, the watch drew large crowds. Beating many of the expectations, the new Rolex Sky Dweller dazzled with its intricate yet sporty design and highly advanced timepiece technology.

skydweller bezel ref 326939

Skydweller Bezel

The Sky Dweller is visually similar to the previous Rolex Day Date. However, the Sky Dweller offered a new special technology allowing the dial to display both an annual calendar and dual time. Though the calendar feature was nothing new for Rolex, the Sky Dweller offers a special annual calendar that is based on a mechanism called SAROS. The name comes from the Greek term for the cycle of the earth, moon, and sun. Rolex’s impressive precision and skill is evident in the calendar feature, which calculates when the right number of dates have passed so it properly and accurately turns to reveal the new month. The months are also represented on the dial. For example, the two o’clock mark would represent February, which is the second month.

Skydweller Reference 326939

Skydweller Reference 326939

The Sky Dweller not only offers an advanced calendar feature, but also has the ability to tell time for two different time zones. The local time is set on the main dial, as it is the most commonly read and also works in conjunction with the date feature. The second time zone is read using an off-centered rotating disc with numbers ranging from 1 to 24 above the six o’clock mark. A small red arrow hand is used to read the time in the secondary time zone.

Rolex Skydweller Bracelet

What makes all of these wonderful and useful features possible is the new caliber 9001. Rightly considered the most complex Rolex caliber yet, it offers 28,800 beats per hour with a power reserve of 72 hours. While the caliber makes the unique features work, the unique bezel set them. Rolex developed an operating control ring called Ring Command which allows the wearer to set the date, local time, and reference time all from the crown. The fluted bezel is not marked, but does rotates to three different positions. By rotating, it allows the crown to have only one setting position.

Available in 18k white gold with a champagne dial, 18k yellow gold with a white sating dial, and everose gold with a chocolate dial, the Sky Dweller wristwatch is also an aesthetically pleasing watch. With its many features, including an annual calendar and secondary time reading as well as its unique Ring Command bezel, the Sky Dweller is not only an advanced piece of technology, but a useful and versatile tool for everyday or dress wear.

The most expensive Rolex watch to date is certainly the extravagant and extremely rare Rolex GMT Master Ice men’s wristwatch. Market pricing has set the value of this particular timepiece around $485,350 USD.

Rolex GMT Ice Wristwatch

Rolex GMT Ice Wristwatch

The Rolex GMT Master Ice wristwatch is certainly aesthetically stimulating and visually pleasing. It is made of some of the finest materials, including 18 ct white gold and nearly 30 carats of brilliantly cut diamonds that cover nearly every inch of the watch.

Rolex Ice Case, Bezel and Dial

Rolex Ice Case, Bezel and Dial

Though covered in diamonds, Rolex did not skimp on the watch’s key technological features that Rolex is known for. The watch features an 18 ct white gold case that has a thickness of 13 mm. This Oyster case, which utilizes a screw down Triplock winding crown and screw down case back, is able to withstand water pressure up to 100 meters (330 feet). Inside the waterproof case is the caliber 3186 self-winding automatic lever movement with 31 jewels. Though this is a self-winding movement, the watch does have a 50 hour power reserve. The dial features a date aperture at the 3 o’clock mark, while a black GMT 13 hour hand allows the wearer to set and view a second time zone.

Diamond Rolex Watch - GMT Ice

Diamond Rolex Watch – GMT Ice

What makes this particular Rolex so visually appealing are the many brilliant diamonds that adorn the case, bracelet, dial, and bezel. The 18 ct white gold case and lugs are set with 79 round diamonds. The bezel, also made of 18 ct white gold, is set with baguette cut diamonds. The dial of the Rolex GMT Master Ice is one of its most striking features, with waves of small diamonds flowing on the dial face. Luminous hour markers and hands are lined in black to make them more legible.

Atop the case is a scratch resistant sapphire crystal. The timepiece is finished with a matching 18 ct white gold Oyster bracelet, completely covered with diamonds. The center links are covered in baguette cut diamonds, while the links on either side of the central link are covered in round brilliant diamonds. The bracelet is completed with an Oyster lock clasp, which ensures the watch remains securely on the wrist.

Though extravagant, this timepiece also meets Rolex’s strict standards, offering advanced features like a date aperture and a waterproof case. This timepiece is also known for its precision, despite the clear effort that went into its visual design. The Rolex GMT Master Ice is really a perfect fusion of both extravagant luxury and technological innovation.
