Rolex Watches

At Bob’s Watches we see our fair share of Rolex watches flying off the shelves.  When it comes to fashion and the Rolex watch world there are watches that are in high demand and others that have a lesser demand.  If you are looking for a stylish watch that will turn heads and transform you into the envy of the neighborhood, take a look at one of the top selling Rolex watches.  For those who want to go against the grain you might want to check out the “What’s Not” section.

No matter what your choice you can’t go wrong with a timeless Rolex watch.

What’s Hot

Bob’s Watches has seen a surge in demand for two watches over the last few months.  We can’t keep them in stock.  If you are looking for a hot watch that is in high demand you will want to consider one of these two options.

Hot: Rolex GMT Batman 116710

rolex gmt batman

Rolex GMT-Master II 116710BKSO

The all-new Rolex GMT-Master “Night & Day” displays a striking color combination of black and blue, mimicking the colors sported by the fictional action hero Batman. This watch sports an interesting combination of both colors, unlike any other Rolex created before. Just as other special addition Rolex watches have received nicknames, like the all Green LV Submariner fondly called ‘The Hulk,’ the Night & Day has been fondly called the “Batman,” due to its coloring, strong and durable design, and high tech features. It is a great collector’s piece, as well as a versatile and stylish accessory, fitting for most occasions.

The retail pricing for the Rolex GMT 116710 has seen a steady increase. Looking at the current trend, these watches will likely increase in value.

Hot: Rolex Submariner 16613 Serti Dial

submariner 16613 serti dial

Submariner 16613 with Serti Dial

The French term serit means ‘setting,’ but has also come to represent a style of Rolex watches, featuring jewels set within the design of the watch. The Submariner 16613 is of the serti design, featuring a champagne or slate dial set with 8 round diamonds and 3 sapphire markers. The Rolex Submariner 16613 is a Perpetual watch meaning it runs continuously for 2-3 days without requiring movement. Movement, rather than winding, keeps it running. Its combination of 18k gold and stainless steel paired with its ability to resistant water up to 300 meters makes it a classy and luxurious option, while still offering the endurance one expects from a Submariner.

While this specific watch has been discontinued, retail on the 16613 has seen a steady increase over the years.

What’s Not

While still a stylish and popular watch, Bob’s has noticed demand for the 116610 decreasing.

Not: Green Rolex Submariner 116610

Green Rolex Submariner 116610

Green Rolex Submariner 116610

The Green Rolex Submariner offers some improvements to the model, but has also drawn some criticism. The movement, in particular, has been said to lack refinement and technological prowess. This is easily debated, however. The Submariner is designed for divers, thus is made to withstand high water pressure. When the watch is used for its designed purposes, it functions more as a tool than an accessory. Despite its tool-like concept, it is still a beautiful and functional accessory. The ceramic bezel fabrication process has been improved, creating a truer color. Larger markers and bigger hands have been added to the watch, along with an anti-reflective coating on the date bubble crystal changing the watch’s appearance slightly, but making it more legible. The Glidelock clasp is a new addition which allows for simple and fine adjustments, allowing the watch to be easily and securely placed over a dive suit. Inside, the watch has also received some tweeks. For example, the old Rolex Caliber 3135 has been upgraded to a new Parachrom Bleu hairspring. This hairspring is completely anti-magnetic and highly temperature- and shock-resistant.  Thus, it is built for enduring the many adventures the wearer may plan, while still maintaining its sporty exterior. Despite its slow movement now, its precision design and craftsmanship will endure, leading to appreciation in the future.

The Rolex Submariner 116610 models have seen an increase in retail price over the years as seen in the below chart.  The blue line represents the black dial 116610N models and the red line represents the green dial 116610V models.

Rolex CEO Jean-Frédéric Dufour

Jean-Frédéric Dufour has been named the new global CEO for Rolex SA. An official press release from Rolex read:

“Rolex confirms the arrival of Jean-Frederic Dufour, current CEO of Zenith, to ROLEX SA to take over the direction at a date still to be determined, and in agreement with the company’s standing CEO, Gian Riccardo Marini.

All other communication will be released in due course.”

rolex building

Rolex Building in Geneva

Who is Jean-Frédéric Dufour? Originally hailing from Geneva, the city where Rolex established its headquarters in 1919, he has served as CEO for Zenith since 2009. Under his leadership, Zenith had once again started to experience strong growth, including the 2012 sponsorship of the fastest man in the world.

Moving to Rolex, Dufour will become the company’s sixth CEO, and the fourth since 2008. He will be replacing current CEO Gian Riccardo Marini, who has served in the position since May 3th 2011. An official start date for Dufour has yet to be announced. This appointment is extremely important in the watch world. Rolex is the premier watchmaker not only in Switzerland, but in the world. It is also one of the 10 best known brands in the world, period. Thus, when Rolex does something, those in the watchmaking or watch collecting world need to pay attention.

Watches Produced by Rolex

What can the watchmaking and collecting world expect from this new CEO? Gregory Pons, the first to publish the breaking news on his website Business Montres, thinks it is a ‘youthful’ move from Rolex. Taking a youthful approach will hopefully ‘dust off’ the brand, appealing to the up and coming generations. Dufour is 45 years old, which makes him a good bridge to both the younger and older generations. Dufour was also trained by Jean-Claude Biver, former CEO of luxury watch brand Hublot. Biver is credited with saving the watch industry from the ‘quartz movements,’ as well as training many successful watch company CEO’s.

Dufour is a big move for Rolex, but will surely bring fresh and new ideas. However, Dufour’s term as CEO will set the trends for Rolex, as well as many other watch makers, for possibly the next 20 years. Dufour is also new to Rolex, and will need time to learn the company and choose the direction it will go in. Luckily, he has real expertise with watches, as well as a young and appealing look. His appeal will certainly work in Rolex’s favor.

Vintage Rolex 1803 Day Date

This week’s Vintage of the week is a Rolex Day Date 1803 that has been photographed on a Gibson Les Paul guitar.

Officially released in 1956, the Rolex 6511 “Day Date” revived the look at feel of the timepiece. The “Day Date” name came from two new features: a window at 12 showing the day and a subsequent window at 3 showing the date. The addition of the day and date added extra complexity to the watch with the addition of the automatic movement day and date discs. The case became much thicker. This, however, was not a bad thing. Aesthetically, the larger, screw-down case, made the watch carry much more presence on the wrist. After the introduction of the “President” bracelet, featuring a concealed clasp, the popularity of the “Day Date” soared, quickly becoming Rolex’s most popular watch.

The externally identical 6611 model was released a year later, featuring the new caliber 1055 movement. The caliber 1055 movement offered a free sprung Micro-Stella balance. With an accuracy standard guarantee within + 3.0 seconds per day, this version was the first to be labeled “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” on the dial. After several caliber evolutions, the double quick-set caliber 3155 was introduced in model 18238 in 1988. The caliber 3155 is still used in all Rolex Day-Date models to this day.

The Day Date quickly came to represent accomplishment, having been worn by some of the most accomplished men in the world, including Winston Churchill and Dwight Eisenhower. The watch eventually earned the nickname “the Presidents’ watch,” as several US presidents, including Roosevelt, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, and Raegan, are all known to have worn a Day-Date. Initially, the tern “President” referred to the type of bracelet attached to the Day Date. However, it soon came to commonly refer to the entire timepiece.

Aesthetically, the Day Date was available in white gold, yellow gold, pink gold, and platinum. Winston Churchill, for example, famously owned a pink gold Day Date, while Eisenhower owned a yellow gold Day Date.

Some technological changes were made over the next few years, including the addition of the “hack” feature around 1972. The hack feature allowed the second hand to be stopped the time needed to be reset. The later “quick set” feature, introduced with caliber 3055in the late 1970′s, allowed the wearer to simply pull the button out half way and, with a few turns, correct date displayed. Before, many turns were needed. The inclusion of sapphire crystal was another great advance for the Day Date. The sapphire crystal added to the durability of the watch, fitting tighter than the plastic previously used. It also had great aesthetic value, offering near scratch proof resistance and a sleeker look than before.

By 1989, the “double quick set” was introduced with caliber 3155. This allowed the date and day to be easily and quickly changed with the same button. Aesthetically, jewels were added, including diamonds on the bezel, creating a richer and more luxurious look.

monte carlo rolex masters

The Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters title was won on Sunday by No. 3 on the Emirates ATP rankings, Stanislas Wawrinka. Failing to Navok Djokovic in Rome in 2008 and Rafael Nadal in Madrid in 2013, it was Wawrinka’s time to shine. After a rough start, Wawrinka defeated Swiss countryman Roger Federer 4-6, 7-6(5), and 6-2, securing his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 trophy. In their 15 meetings, 29 year old Wawrinka has only attained victory over Federer once previously.

The pressure was high. The Monte-Carlo Country Club, the setting of the match, was filled with spectators, including celebrity guests like Prince Alber of Monaco and Tommy Hilfiger. In the first set, Federer applied immediate pressure, earning a break point. Wawrinka had 11 winners and 17 unforced errors in the first set. Despite this, Federer walked away the victor of an intense first set.

Wawrinka explained that to gain the advantage he made small adjustments, including playing more aggressively in an attempt to push his opponent more. His method seemed to work, as the turning point came with a second-set tie-breaker. Wawrinka maintained his composure and focus, minimizing his errors and forcing Federer to push.

Using the momentum he gained from winning the second set, Wawrinka continued to dominate in the third. Wawrinka’s surge of energy and confidence led to efficiently attacking Federer’s serve and breaking immediately for the early lead.

As Federer’s aggressiveness depleted, Wawrinka’s increased. He pressed for a second break, which he secured with a remarkable angle-abusing cross-court backhand. That particular striking, which had abandoned him in the early stages of the game, proved its worth in his increasingly aggressive playing. This aggressive playing resulted in a 4-0 lead.

After finishing as runner-up to Nadal three times from 2006 to 2008, 32 year old Federer must have been looking to win the elusive Monte-Carlo trophy for the first time. Despite his loss, the Swiss has won 21 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles, with his last win in Cincinnati in August 2012.

The match, lasting 2 hours and 13 minutes, secured Wawrinka’s first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title. As the victor, Wawrinka received 1000 Emirates ATP Ranking points and $549,000 in prize money. He was presented with the trophy by Prince Albert II of Monaco and Princess Charlene of Monaco. With the conclusion of the match, Wawarinka maintains his No. 3 ranking, while Federer remains at No. 4.

The Rolex Submariner 16618LB is powered by a perpetual, mechanical, self-winding caliber 3135 jewel movement. The ease and convenience of a perpetual movement is unparalleled, as any type of movement, including daily wear, will keep the watch in motion. The movement is also certified by the independent non-profit group the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC). The COSC puts the movement through a rigorous 15 day test, exposing it to various elements and conditions to ensure precision and the highest level of timepiece craftsmanship. Its seal of approval is engraved on each of Rolex’s Perpetual movement timepieces.

The Submariner features the powerfully protective Oyster case. This 40 mm case is formed from corrosion resistant materials, including 18k gold, and offers exceptional scratch resistance. Keeping the design and construction centered at the company, Rolex operates its own foundry. Using the purest materials and advanced technology, Rolex is able to craft all aspects of their timepieces, including the precious metals surrounding them, with the greatest precision and devotion.

The Oyster case also guarantees water resistance up to 300 meters (100 feet). Originally designed with deep-sea divers in mind, the Rolex Submariner is not only an aesthetically pleasing accessory, but also a tool for exploring the depths.

The central visual element of the Submariner 16618LB is its blue dial. Again appealing to adventurers, the blue dial is specially designed with a Chromalight display, which lasts up to eight hours. This ensures visibility at all times, even in the dark waters of the ocean. It maintains its brightness by recharging automatically when exposed to natural light. Thus, it is always ready when the wearer is. The Oyster case and blue dial are topped with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, complete with a Cyclops lens over the date for better legibility.

The Submariner’s bezel is another important visual element. The 18K gold blue bezel has 60-minute graduations that allow divers to accurately monitor diving time and decompression stops. Because it is unidirectional, the diver does not risk spending too long underwater. The ridged edges also allow for easy grip underwater, allowing a diver to fully utilize this special feature.

The watch is completed with a Rolex Oyster bracelet with folding Oysterlock. The bracelet is completed with a Rolex Glidelock extension system clasp. Originally introduce in the 1930s, the Oyster bracelet is made from 18k gold, matching that on the Oyster case. The bracelet is designed for durability and comfort. The clasp is specially designed to prevent accidental opening, as well as allowing for the addition of extra length to easily expand the bracelet over a diving suit.

The Timelessness of the Chronograph Daytona

Rolex Daytona

There are legendary wristwatches in the timepiece market; and then there are icons born of ingenious micromechanics, flawless aesthetics, incomparable functionality, and an aura of mystique that makes it matchless.  One such chronograph recently celebrated its 50th anniversary: the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona.

rolex watches

A Variety of Modern Watches Currently Offered By Rolex

Rolex introduced its Professional series of wristwatches in 1953, which included the Explorer for explorers and mountaineers, and the Submariner designed exclusively for deep sea diving.

Rolex Daytona Race

Rolex Daytona Race

In 1963 a new chronograph was introduced to the Professional series designed to celebrate the profession of race car driving: the Cosmograph – later named Daytona after its official designation as the Official Timepiece of the Daytona International Speedway in Florida.  The invention of the Cosmograph name by Rolex indicated that this newly-introduced model was a leap in craftsmanship and design for the company, and the results revealed unprecedented engineering and artistry in timekeeping design.

vintage daytona 6239

Vintage Rolex Daytona 6239

One of the most noticeable innovations came through the contrasting color schemes between the counters and the dial, with either black on white, or white on black, allowing easier readability.  In addition, the tachymeter scale – permitting wearers to measure average speeds over a given distance – inscribed around the circumference of the bezel gave the dial a more pronounced aesthetic.

rolex movement

Daytona Watch Movement

The manually-wound mechanical movement of Rolexes had always been praised for their precision and reliability, and the introduction of new dials further enhanced the mass appeal of the Cosmograph.  One specific dial that earned considerable attention was the one preferred by Paul Newman, a dial made famous due to the Hollywood star and race car enthusiast wearing that particular Daytona model regularly.

Rolex Daytona 6265 FAB Movement

Rolex Daytona 6265 FAB Movement

In 1965 new modifications were introduced, including screw-down pushers, instead of pump pushers from the original, further solidifying the waterproof Oyster concept.  The names “Oyster” and “Cosmograph” appeared inscribed on all of the dials, and a black Plexiglass insert for the tachymetric bezel made visibility even more profound.  Initially “Daytona” was inscribed on some dials exclusively within the U.S. market, before eventually making its way on the dial of every Cosmograph model.  The Oyster Cosmograph also became available in an 18 carat yellow gold version with the now iconic “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” on the dial.

The Cosmograph Daytona took a major innovative leap in 1988 by becoming self-winding.  Quartz watches had most recently become available in other timepieces, but Rolex stuck with the intricate mechanical movements it had been producing since its formation.  They chose the most reliable chronograph movement (Zenith El Primero) they could find and then replaced nearly 50% of the mechanics with components designed exclusively for the Cosmograph Daytona.  Aside from technical ingenuity, the newly-designed features brought out the immediacy and elegance of its aesthetics.  The Oyster case was increased from 36 to 40 mm, shoulders were inserted to help protect the crown, the tachymetric bezel was made wider, new hands, new hour markers, and new counters within banded circles all became part of the newly-introduced model.

daytona 116520

The Daytona 116520 Introduced in 2000

Never one to rest on its laurels, Rolex entered the new millennium with its newest 2000 model, and the results did not disappoint.  With a clear nod to the traditional aesthetics of the 1988 Cosmograph Daytona (distinctively solid lines and designs that perfectly balanced form and functionality), the truly groundbreaking achievements made with the Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona lie within the mechanics underneath.

daytona 116520 dial

Rolex Reference 116520

The Calibre 4130 marked a new achievement in self-winding chronograph movements, which was specifically designed for the Cosmograph Daytona and manufactured exclusively in-house.  This new movement marked an unprecedented achievement in engineering and design, producing a self-winding chronograph unequaled in durability, efficiency, precision and reliability.  The engineers behind the Calbre 4130 were able to cut the mechanism components by 60%, increasing space and making it possible to support a larger mainspring that helps extend power reserve from 50 to 72 hours.

rolex daytona 116520

Daytona 116520 Bracelet

Another major advancement in the 2000 model was the Parachrom hairspring, a part designed and manufactured exclusively by Rolex that further enhances the precision of the Daytona by increasing resistance to outside disturbances like magnetic fields, temperature variations, and the thousands of shocks it goes through on a daily wearer, while staying 10 times more precise than a traditional hairspring.

Now, 50 years after its arrival, the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona has become the first in the Professional series to be featured in platinum, one of the rarest and most precious of metals.  The dial comes with an ice blue face, and the newly-introduced Cheracrom bezel has even more resistance properties and a balanced aesthetic that has continually defined the legendary Cosmograph Daytona over the decades.

The three suspects stormed the jewelry store demanding Rolex watches and other jewelry.   There is some speculation that this robbery may be connected to a prior incident that happened in Plainfield Township, which also occurred on a Tuesday afternoon.  The suspect cars in both robberies have similar descriptions.  During the Plainfield robbery, similar demands were made but the suspects fled the scene after one of the culprits was shot by the owner of the store.

Map of Rolex Watch Robbery

It is no surprise that a thief would make demands for Rolex watches.  They are one of the most coveted timepieces on the market and can carry a high demand and price.  It is unfortunate to hear what lengths people will go to acquire Rolex watches.  It just goes to show you that when buying or selling a Rolex watch you need to do so in a secure environment.  Interacting with a professional company who provides a secure environment for transactions is an important factor to consider before you decide to buy or sell your watch in person.

The three suspects who allegedly robbed both locations are still on the loose.  If you have any information that may help people apprehend these suspects please contact the Bloomfield Police Department.

About Ed Delgado
The following article is authored by Ed Delgado. Ed is one of the leading experts in Rolex Double Red Sea Dwellers. In 2004, Ed created DoubleRedSeaDweller.com to help like-minded collectors. Ed is a passionate Rolex watch collector and author.

double red sea dweller

Double Red Sea Dweller

The SeaDweller was born in the 1960s out of the collaboration with COMEX a French deep sea diving company, and the NASA of the deep seas. The new model was called reference 1665 and based out of the existing Submariner model. This was evident since a submariner thin case was used for the early Seadwellers and a Helium Escape Valce (HEV) was added to be able to withstand much larger depth ratings.

Initial models were issued to deep sea explorers of the 1960s in various configurations but in the late 1960 and early 1970s the model made it to the Rolex retail stores. The new sea dweller was based out of a larger case, new domed crystal, HEV and new dial with two lines of red writing on the dial. SUBMARINER, SEADWELLER 2000, indicating the new watch was based out of the existing submariner but instead of 660ft of depth, the new watch was rated to over 2000 feet. They usual date cyclop was also gone with the domed crystal and a case back engraving was also new to this model.

double red sea-dweller

Stainless Steel Double Red Sea-dweller

The Double Red SeaDweller (DRSD) was produced for approximately 10 yrs from 1967 to 1977 with serial number range 1.7 to 5.1 million. There were four different dial variations made in the regular production model with three different case back configurations.

double red sea dweller

Double Red Sea Dweller Watch

The early version and the most rare is the mark I dial on a patent pending caseback. These were made in the serial number range of 1.7 to 2.2 million. Mark II dials have also been seen on patent pending models. Patent pending mark I watches command a pretty significant premium and some have sold for over $100,000.00. Mark II patent pending are also very desirable watches by collectors.

The second version of the dial, mark II, have a different look and some have oxidized and change color to a very “chocolate” or “tropical” brownish color. These watches are very attractive and have become very fashionable due to their unusual vintage color of the dial.

The mark III and IV dial were the final version in the later production. Mark IV are the most common, followed by mark III, II and the rarest mark I.

flat view double red sea dweller

Upside Down View of the Double Red Sea Dweller

The DRSD has become iconic for several reasons. The watch is relatively easy to find but finding a nice example with nearly perfect dial and original condition makes it relatively rare. The watch wears very comfortably for everyday use and the beautiful dial with two lines of red makes the dial stand out from most other watches available. Not to mention the watch is relatively indestructible plus tells the date! Lastly, the allure of the vintage look of the domed crystal makes this watch a must have to any vintage watch collector.

back case double red sea dweller

Back Case Double Red Sea Dweller

Pricing of the DRSD has reflected its polarity amongst watch collectors. The bases for a serious Rolex collector, the watch has become an icon.

The watch sold for a few hundred dollars in the 1970s and significantly more than the red submariner. In about 2000, they sold in the $5,000.00 range and in the early 2003 was trading in the $8,500.00 range. In the boom of easy money of early 2000’s, and with more knowledge from collectors about the watch, its history and the ease of information available from the internet, the watch took off to an incredible price range.

movement double red sea dweller

Movement from a Double Red Sea Dweller

In conclusion. The DRSD will continue to win collectors hearts and mind. The original tool watch with larger dimensions, and attractive dial configuration and writing on the case back will continue to be the cornerstone of most Rolex vintage collections. Rolex has even recognized the this and a Rolex Deep Sea continues to be the desirable brand used by current deep sea explorers and even after its production of the deep sea and the new seadweller, the DNA of the original seadweller 1665 remains.

Tiffany GMT Master 2

After the release of the Rolex GMT Master II, Rolex made a surprising move; they continued to produce and improve upon the original GMT Master with its own continued line. One of these variations is the GMT Master ref. 16700. Produced for a surprisingly long run from 1988 to 1999, the Rolex GMT Master ref. 16700 replaced ref. 16750, introduced about the same time as the new and innovative GMT Master II ref. 16710. The new GMT Master model was actually less expensive than its counterpart, the GMT Master II, but maintained some of its features.

To compare with the GMT Master II, as well as improve the overall GMT Master design, the new ref. 16700 utilized the updated caliber 3175, which functioned identically to the previous caliber 3075, the watch also offered hacking and quickset features. The GMT Master ref. 16700 was produced in much smaller quantities than the new GMT Master II. However, it offered a more affordable watch than the GMT Master II, yet still offered a durable and innovative watch, as Rolex customers would expect.

The caliber 3175 maintained the non-independent hour hand, setting the GMT Master ref. 16700 apart from ref. 16710. New to the GMT Master ref. 16700 was the addition of a sapphire crystal, utilizing new technology to create a virtually scratch resistant surface. The GMT Master ref. 16700 was contained in a new case, only available in stainless steel. The Date-wheel maintained vintage open numbers until around 1992. The Bezel was initially only available in the popular blue and red “Pepsi” combination. However, some collectors have ref. 16700’s with a plain black bezel. Either these were later changed on the owner’s request, or a very small number were produced with black bezels.

The new model also contained a Tritum dial until 1997, and a Swiss Luminova dial beginning in 1998, both of which featured white gold indexes. Strength was built into ref. 16700 just as it was with other GMT Master models, feature pressure resistance up to 100 meters (330 feet) and an Oyster or Jubilé bracelet. Beginning in 1989, the GMT Master ref. 16700 featured Rolex’s patented Oysterlock technology. Designed to prevent accidental opening of the clasp and potential loss of the watch, Rolex’s Oysterlock technology added an extra level of strength and security.

Though it may have fallen in the GMT Master II’s shadow, the Rolex GMT Master ref. 16700 offers many of the same features, luxurious materials, and high quality and precision craftsmanship, but at a more affordable price. Despite its long run, the quantity of GMT Master ref. 16700s was produced in smaller numbers, making it an excellent and rarer collector’s piece.

Vintage Rolex Submariner Watch

We are enchanted with technological must-haves. A smart, sophisticated approach is the golden ticket to fashion nowadays. Less is more, and the traditionalists were right all along. Despite the many functions our must-haves serve – texting, calling, Googling, Liking – none compare to the signature craftsmanship expected of a genuine Rolex.

wrist-vintage-explorer

Vintage Rolex Explorer 1655

The way we pace our chronological step says a lot about our personal aesthetic take on the times. Wristwatches have gone through evolutionary style changes in direct reflection of the ongoing fashion trends we see shifting every season, and their accessibility has never been easier now that retailers have the immediacy of the online marketplace at their whim. Luxury goods are now more readily available to the public than ever before, and the internet has made it possible for your everyday shopper to enhance their lifestyle with some of the most coveted timepieces in production. And the best part is buyers can get genuine, authentic items from trusted and respected sellers who have a true appreciation for their merchandise and their customers. For Rolex admirers, new, used, pre-owned, and classic models that are affordably-priced can be in your hands through just a few easy clicks.

deciding on a model

Double Red Sea Dweller

Some people may argue that purchasing luxury goods online is not the safest route, but with some savvy shopping via insider tips up your sleeve, you can come out with a true gem.

Spotting a Fake

Real Submariner Left, Fake Submariner on Right. Image Courtesy Ebay.com

Real Submariner Left, Fake Submariner on Right. Image Courtesy Ebay.com

Counterfeit Rolexes are a common thing in the luxury timepiece marketplace, so knowing how to spot a fake can save you money and a lot of embarrassment.

The following tips can help you separate a fugazi from a Rolex original:

  1. If the price is too good to be true, then your instincts are probably right.
  2. Consider your surroundings. If a Rolex is being offered to you in an alley, walk away.
  3. If you are having trouble viewing the magnified date, then it is most likely a fake.
  4. If it says “Oyster” on the dial, dunk the timepiece in question in water for a few seconds. When leakage is apparent, then the watch is not genuine since all Rolex Oyster perpetual watches are 100% waterproof.
  5. Check the model number online and verify it coincides with the metal. If the two do not match, you have a counterfeit.
  6. Rolexes are designed to perfection, and that includes the writing. When any kinds of misspellings are spotted or the text is unclear, its authenticity is doubtful.
  7. Case backs on any genuine Rolex are not made of glass. With the exception of two extremely rare models from the 1930s, all modern Rolexes have steel case backs.
  8. Usually on the interior of the band of the watch, engravings showing the model and serial number can be found. After examining them with a magnifying glass, anything less than perfectly cut should be called into question.
  9. With special Rolex tools, you can take the case back off of the watch and examine its inner workings. The gears should be different colors, and the interior of the case back itself should include its origins (“Made In”), metal type, and model number.
  10. Listen closely to the watch. If loud ticking can be heard, then it is a definite fake. Replicating the perfection of a Rolex is nearly impossible, so imitation gears will not match up to the same high-quality standards of an original.

Deciding On a Model

rolex models

Choosing which kind of model to buy is solely up to the purchaser, but a quick overview of the different Rolex lines is a great way to figure out which one speaks your stylistic language:

  • The Submariner is the classic model worn by the coolest of cool, Steve McQueen. It is a sport watch designed for true deep sea diving, but with the omnipresent Rolex flair.
  • The President is considered a classier, more elegant model that can perfectly accentuate any attire when impressions matter most.
  • The Rolex Datejust was originally introduced in 1945, and is considered a true mark of elegance that can be embraced by both him and her.
  • The Yacht-Master is a sleek, sporty statement perfectly matching adventure with elegance, and can come in either platinum or stainless steel finishes.
  • The Cosmograph Daytona is a solid, reliable, and classic timepiece perfectly blending the sport of racing with meticulous aesthetics in watchmaking craftsmanship.

These are just some of the models being offered by Rolex, but anyone curious about their reliability – or ability to engage onlookers – should not worry themselves. The mechanical ingenuity and sheer inventiveness the company has become famous for stands as a true testament to their peerless status, which is now a reflection of their loyal customers.

Where to Buy

Bob’s Watches Lobby

Since some consider a Rolex purchase to be a big one, approaching the market with a trained eye is the absolute best way to make such an investment. Pre-owned and used models should be considered on the first purchase, and in time one can eventually discover which model suits them best and buy a newer version.

Try and avoid questionable online outlets like Craigslist or eBay when conducting business in the realm of Rolexes. There are a lot of people out there with less than honest ideas on their minds, so make sure to buy from a trusted and reliable retailer who is willing to help you get the most out of your buck with genuine products that are happy to authenticate for you. In addition, if a company offers warranty options and a reasonable return policy is available, you can most likely trust them. These companies know full well how valuable their merchandise is, and should go out of their way to accommodate anyone willing to make such an investment.

Taking that initial plunge and buying your first Rolex is indeed a big step. Knowing what to look out for and gaining better insight on what flaws constitute fakes is a great way to ensure you know where your money is going.

Anyone considering a Rolex purchase should be asking a number of questions – and rightly so.

The following FAQ’s represent a sampling of common inquiries for first-time Rolex buyers:

How can I get the most value out of my first Rolex purchase?
Buying a used Rolex is not like buying a used car.  While vehicles may depreciate over time, Rolexes generally sustain and increase in value as time passes by.  First time purchasers would be wise to consider buying a used or pre-owned model on their first go around.

If my Rolex purchase is not satisfactory, is there a return policy?
Any pre-owned watch purchased from us, with the exception of vintage models, can be returned as long as the piece is in the same condition sold and has the boxes, papers, books, and accessories included.  Notify us of your intent to return the item(s) immediately.  Watches must be returned within three (3) calendar days from the initial purchase.  This applies solely to online purchases.  All in-store and international sales are final.

What should I do if my Rolex breaks, stops working, or is damaged?
We offer customers a one year warranty on all Rolex watches, so if the timepiece in question happens to break, is damaged, or shows defective signs of any kind, simply send it back for restoration and we will fix the problem(s).

Is it safe to ship a Rolex?
Upon receipt of your order and verified approval from the credit card company, all purchases made before 2pm PST will be shipped on the next business day.  All domestic orders are overnighted via FedEx and are fully insured with no charge to the customer whatsoever.

How exactly do Rolexes keep time?
With the rare exception of ladies and gents models in the Cellini Collection, almost all Rolexes are self-winding through daily wrist movements from the wearer.  This energy is translated into the actual mechanisms of the watch, which causes the rotor within the casing to pivot and thus move the hands of the watch.

Is my Rolex waterproof?
All Rolex watches can withstand water at depths of at least 100m.  The Rolex Deep Sea Challenge, meanwhile, was recently descended 10,908 meters into the deepest point of the world’s oceans and proved its precision the entire time.

After a flawless performance by William Fox-Pitt and Bay My Hero, Fox-Pitt was able to claim the 2014 Rolex Kentucky title. At the complete of the three day event, Fox Pitt ended with a score of 44.0. He took the win on his 11-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding making a grand finish by jumping double clear to claim his third Kentucky win.

Bay My Hero has been in Fox Pitt’s yard since the horse was five years old. The two are like family and their long relationship paid off Sunday at the Kentucky Horse Park.

“Each win is very special for its own merits. I think that with every one you still can’t believe that it happened,” according to Fox-Pitt. “The odds are always so stacked against you in our sport. I didn’t come here expecting to win; I came with two lovely horses hoping they would go well. To come out on top is just fantastic; it’s very special.”

Lauren Kieffer from Middleburg, Va and Veronica was able to claim second place finishing with a score of 46.7. Kieffer was seen riding 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare. The two looked like a veteran pair during the jumping phase on Sunday.

Vintage Explorer 1655

The Rolex Explorer reference 1655 is now an extremely popular and rare Rolex model. However, it wasn’t always so. Originally introduced in 1971, the Rolex Explorer II was designed for cave divers, offer special features which could be utilized while underwater cave diving or spelunking. Rolex watchmakers knew that its customer base would need help keeping track of day and night while spending hours in dark caves. Thus, the Explorer 1655 features a 24-hour hand which tells the wearer whether the watch is indicating a.m. or p.m. Rolex went a step further and made the extra hour hand a bright orange, helping it stand out and be easier to read in dark or unfavorable conditions. In 1974, Rolex increased the watch’s visibility more by added a luminous circle to further aid the wearer in determining the time in the dark. Though the extra hour hand was painted a bright red in 1975, the watch continued to be called the “orange hand” Explorer by collectors. This nickname persists today.

The Explorer II 1655 features either a 1570 or 1575 movement and, like the popular GMT Rolex, the Explorer 1655 utilizes a fixed stainless steel bezel. The watch was produced until 1985 when it was discontinued.

Initially the Rolex Explorer 1655 as not overly popular. During its 1971-1985 run, many critics claimed the Explorer was “illegible” and “cluttered.” It wasn’t until Steve McQueen began sporting the watch that its popularity and demand increased, leading it to be lovingly nicknamed the “Steve McQueen” Rolex. Though actor and racecar driver Steve McQueen wore a Tag Heuer Monaco wristwatch in the film Le Mans, he chose to wear a Rolex Explorer II reference 1655 in his real life.

Sir Edmund Hillary Rolex Explorer

Steve McQueen was not the only famous person to sport the Rolex Explorer II. While it was initially designed for cave divers, other sportsmen utilized it as a tool. For example, famous mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary was given a Rolex Explorer II reference 1655 by Rolex Geneva for his enormous achievement of climbing Mt. Everest. A charming Rolex advertisement from the period features Hillary and the Explorer II, stating that “In 1953 they used Rolex Oysters and oxygen on Everest. In 1978 they managed without oxygen.”

The “Orange Hand” or “Steve McQueen” Rolex Explorer II reference 1655 is a fascinating piece of Rolex history. Originally a relatively unpopular model, the Explorer II 1655 is a perfect example of how celebrity can make a product. Though the Explorer II utilizes many of the features of other popular Rolex models, such as the waterproof Oyster case, some critics claimed its design was “cluttered.” However, once Steve McQueen began sporting one as his own personal timepiece, collectors followed. Now, the Explorer II reference 1655 is one of the rarest and most sought after Rolex timepieces.

Rolex Space Dweller

One of the rarest and most highly sought after Rolex watches is the Rolex Space Dweller. The Rolex Space Dweller was originally inspired by a 1963 visit to Japan by astronauts of Project Mercury. Project Mercury was the United States’ first man-in-space program. The Mercury astronauts were a huge hit with the crowds in Japan. Rolex chose to capitalize on their popularity by introducing a special edition of the Explorer for the Japanese market, naming it the Space Dweller. The Space Dweller was released shortly after the astronauts’ visit, though it was produced on a trial basis and was only available to the Japanese market, though no one seems to know why Japan was specifically chosen.

The Rolex Space Dweller is so rare that few people have ever seen one in person. Its rarity is due to several factors, including its extremely limited production period as a test-product. Despite the astronauts’ popularity, the Space Dweller’s limited release in Japan did not spark the demand Rolex had hoped for, thus the watch was not put into full production.

While being called an “Explorer,” the Rolex Space Dweller fails to bear an inscription of the Explorer name. Rather, it bears the test “Space Dweller” name. Despite not bearing the Explorer name, the Space Dweller is essentially identical to the popular 1016 Rolex Explorer. Rolex Oyster watches had been famously used by the first team to reach the summit of Mt. Everest in 1953, then re-branded as the Explorer in their honor. Thus, the Explorer was an obvious choice for representing the astronauts of Project Mercury, who were considered the world’s greatest explorers at the time. If the watch had been a commercial success, Rolex would have officially re-branded the test Explorer as the “Space Dweller” for the market.

The rarity of the Space Dweller has caused its price value to sky rocket. As stated, most collectors have never even seen a Space Dweller in person. When one does appear at auction, it can expect to sell for $30,000-$40,000 USD. Though not one of the most expensive Rolex watches demanded by collectors, the Space Dweller is certainly one of the rarest. This is, however, much higher price compared to the non- “Space Dweller” stamped 1016 Explorers, which is essentially the same watch. One is not paying for an Explorer, however. Rather, one is paying for a rare piece of Rolex history, meant to encapsulate the spirit of the original space explorers.

The Rolex Explorer wristwatch is one of the brand’s most recognizable watches. Originally descended from the forerunner of the “Explorer” model, worn by the first party to climb Mt. Everest, the Rolex Explorer reference 1016, specifically, was the longest running of all Explorer models, produced from 1963 to 1989. Replacing reference 6610, reference 1016 is also the most famous Explorer, unique for being the first “James Bond” watch, both mentioned in the books as well as actually being worn by 007 creator Ian Fleming.

Despite its long run and continued reference numbering, there were many changes to reference 1016 during this time. The first version of the model, produced from 1963 to around 1975, used the basic caliber 1560. Over time there were certain updates and modifications, as well as special editions. For example, in 1963 Rolex released the “Space Dweller” as a test product in Japan, taking advantage of the hype of the first visit to Japan by astronauts of the United States’ Project Mercury. The watch, however, was produced in very small quantities and was not a major seller, thus was never brought to full production. Though it is certainly not the most valuable Rolex Explorer, the Space Dweller is certainly one of the rarest.

The Explorer reference 1016 is a fairly simple design, featuring a black matte dial with off-white markers. Like other Rolex watches, the Explorer caliber is encased in a screw down oyster case, with an increased water resistance level from 50 meters in the previous reference, to 100 meters.

The second version of reference 1016 was really the second version of the 1560 caliber. The exterior of the watch remained the same, which caliber 1560 was renamed 1570, incorporated the new “hack” feature, which stops the second hand when the winding crown is pulled out to the hand setting position. By stopping the hand at the “12″ position, it is possible to synchronize the watch’s time with that of another time source.

Simultaneously with the movement change, Rolex introduced the new Oyster bracelet. Made from solid stainless steel as opposed to folded sheets of steel, the Oyster bracelet provides strength, durability, and a classic style to Rolex’s timepieces. It is such a successful edition that the Oyster bracelet is still used on many Rolex models today.

In 1989, the Rolex Explorer reference 1016 was discontinued. It was replaced by the heavily revised Explorer reference 14270, which sported a new case, dial, movement, and glass, with only the hands and name carrying over from reference 1016. Despite its production end, reference 1016 remains the longest running and perhaps one of the most popular Explorer references in Rolex history.
