10 Things You Did Not Know About Rolex

1. Rolex Watches Have Not Always Been That Expensive

Vintage Rolex 2 Tone GMT 1675

Rolex had always provided excellent craftsmanship and advanced technology with their watches. However, they did not start receiving top dollar for them until the eighties. The market demanded flashy items to show wealthy. Rolex increased production, but also increased the price. In 1981 the average Rolex cost about $900. By 1991 this price had increased to $2350.

2. Rolex Watches Have Set Sales Records

Vintage Paul Newman Daytona

The vintage Rolex market boomed with higher demand for older and rarer watches. An extremely rare Rolex set the price record as the most expensive Rolex watch ever sold. The 1942 stainless steel chronograph Rolex was sold for $1.176 million at Christie’s Important Watches sale in Geneva. The sale price has yet to be exceeded.

3. Rolex Watches Work Everywhere

Rolex’s reputation for high quality and expert craftsmanship has not been better tested than at the top of the world and the bottom of the ocean. Sir Edmund Hillary reached the top of Mount Everest in 1953, wearing a specially made Rolex watch. The watch performed flawlessly. The U.S. Navy also tested nature by sending a specially designed research submarine 35,798 feet below sea level, wearing a specially designed Rolex watch. It also perfectly endured the extreme environment.

4. Rolex Uses (and Makes) the Best Materials

Rolex takes advantage of the best materials when constructing their timepieces. Many of these materials, including stainless steel and precious metals, are made in-house. These high quality material ensure that Rolex watches offer better resistance to water, pressure, and shocks.

5. Every Rolex Watch Is Tested

After being assembled by hand, every Rolex watch is pressure tested to ensure there are no air leaks or problems with the case or crystal. These watches are certified to withstand water pressure up to 300 meters (1000 feet).

6. Every Rolex Watch is Still Made By Hand

Watch Movement

Watch Movement

Though demand and technology has changed, Rolex still makes every watch carefully by hand. Some machines are used, but the bulk of construction and piecing together is still done by hand.

7. How to Tell If A Rolex Is Fake

Rolex watches are so well made it is usually easy to tell if a watch is fake. If the second hand gracefully sweeps the dial it is probably a real Rolex. A fake “Rolex” second hand will tick.

8. Rolex Popularity Grew During World War II

Rolex Datejust and WW2 Pilot

Because of their reliability and endurance, many pilots in the British Royal Air Force used Rolex watches during World War II. Seeing the value, these watches were often taken by Nazi soldiers. Rolex, in return, offered replacements to prisoners of war based only on their word, causing Rolex to become a symbol of POWs.

9. Rolex Watches Were Used For the Great Escape (And Worn by Other Famous People)

the great escape steve mcqueen

A Rolex Oyster 3525 was used to escape the Nazi prison camp in the “Great Escape.” The famous story led to the making of the film The Great Escape, starring Steve McQueen. He famously wore a Rolex, as did other famous figures like Winston Churchill and President Eisenhower. Even fictional characters, like Secret Agent James Bond, sport a reliable and useful Rolex.

10. Rolex Is Swiss but Started In England

Rolex Factory

Rolex Factory

Opening in 1905 in London, Rolex was more of a watch assembler than a watch maker, using imported Swiss watch parts and English watch cases. The company eventually moved to Switzerland as British taxes were high and Switzerland had the majority of skilled watch makers in the world.

The New Apple Watch: A Threat to Rolex?

iPhone vs Rolex

iPhone vs Rolex

According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, the Apple Watch “will redefine what people expect from a watch.” Rolex has already set that bar extremely high, incorporating the finest materials and Swiss watch making talent to create true pieces of technological art. While many in the Rolex world are concerned that the niche of mechanical watch making will disappear with the onset of highly technical digital watches, they should not be. It is worth comparing the new Apple Watch and Rolex to understand why.

Visual Appeal

Rolex has long been associated with luxury, offering some of the most expensive watches ever made. This sense of class comes from its use of the finest materials. Rolex has made many precious metals at its in-house foundry, ensuring that their timepieces are made of the finest materials available. Like Rolex watches, the Apple Watch case is available in a variety of metals including stainless steel and 18k gold.

Rolex Wristwatch Collection

Rolex Wristwatch Collection

Rolex watches are also well known for their famous Oyster Case design. Oyster Cases are waterproof up to a certain depth, depending on the specific watch, and were originally intended for use by divers. Almost all Rolex watches feature a round Oyster case. Vintage Rolex watches may feature a plastic crystal but many Rolex watches offer an engineered sapphire crystal for extra protection from water pressure. The Apple Watch offers a minimal rectangular shape case with rounded edges that seamlessly flow into the wristband. The case edges also slope into a finely engineered sapphire crystal face. Though it also features a sapphire crystal like many Rolex watches, the Apple Watch is only water resistant, not waterproof.

Apple iWatch

While the new Apple Watch will certainly never be able to offer the aesthetical beauty and elegance of a Rolex watch, it does offer a streamlined, modern and minimal look that is visually appealing, especially to a modern eye.

Functionality

Apple iWatches

Apple iWatches

Though some of the most famous Rolex watches are made for men, Rolex does offer many watches in a smaller size geared towards women. Apple took a page from Rolex’s book and offers their Apple Watch in two sizes: 38 mm and 42 mm. This will certainly satisfy a range of wrist sizes.

Rolex 5513 Stainless Steel

Rolex has long been a pioneer in functional design for watches, and has created a range of functional and unique bracelets for their timepieces. Rolex has carefully studies ergonomics to ensure their various bracelet styles, including the Oyster and Jubilee Bracelets, are robust, reliable, functional and aesthetically pleasing. Rolex bracelets are usually made in a metal matching the watch’s case, but can also be found in leather.

iWatch Apple

iWatch by Apple

Apple has created a variety of bands for their Apple Watch, including a vintage mesh bracelet and textured leather options. Strap changing is notably easy on the Apple Watch thanks to the watch’s sliding attachment system. Rolex straps, generally, require a Rolex technician to change, offering less variety.

Apple Watch may have a slight advantage with their watch straps, if you only look at their aesthetical value. While they are certainly available in a wide range of colors and styles that is sure to grow, they do not offer the same functional design and safety features offered by Rolex.

Movement SeaDweller 1665

Movement SeaDweller 1665

While many vintage Rolex watches are self-winding mechanical movements, many Rolex watches offer a Perpetual movement, meaning that the watch will continue to run without winding if it is worn or lightly moved within a certain time frame. Thus, if you wear your Rolex every day you will not have to worry about winding it. This makes Rolex watches far more reliable than battery operated watches. Because the Apple Watch is a digital smart watch it does run off a battery. Thus, it will require charging. Apple suggests that the Apple Watch can easily be charged overnight, as long as you remember to plug it in.

Technology

Apple iWatch Close View

The perceived threat of the Apple Watch to Rolex is really about technology. Rolex has long been a leader in watch technology, successfully sending some of their timepieces to the top of the world and the bottom of the ocean. However, Apple Watch uses a different type of technology: software. This software allows the Apple Watch to go places Rolex has not. For example, the Apple Watch offers four LED sensors to measure your heart rate. This is something Rolex has yet to offer in any of their watches. The Apple Watch also allows you to use the watch’s “crown” to scroll through various apps on the watch’s screen. You can even change the watch “dial.” The changeable interface allows users to personalize their Apple Watch, a feature Rolex does not offer.

Though the Apple Watch does offer many fun features, it requires the iPhone to work. This could potentially limit its audience. It also has yet to really offer any features other devices do not. However, it is certainly a fun and new innovation with a lot of potential.

With that being said, the Apple Watch is not a threat to Rolex. Rather, Rolex will continue to dominate the niche mechanical watch market. Those who want a quality time piece that also offers many advanced features, like water resistance, will not go with an Apple Watch. Rather, they will invest in a quality and reliable Rolex.

Apple Watch vs Rolex: Watchmakers & Fashion World Reacts

Apple Watch

The Apple watch continues to make headlines.  Does it live up to all the hype though?  To get some deeper insight Bob’s Watches is publishing reactions from both the fashion world and watchmakers.

Reactions in the Fashion World

To appeal to a wide audience, a watch needs to be both attractive and useful. In the fashion world, however, looks are everything. When the Apple Watch was revealed recently, the fashion industry responded with little praise.

Alain Spinedi, chief executive of privately-owned Montres Louis Erard SA explains that “from the design point of view you cannot say it’s a watch—more an iPhone for the wrist…People may travel with it, but it won’t replace the watch you wear to a party.”Despite Apple’s attempt to offer a smaller version to appeal to women, TV host and model Alexa Chung replied that “It’s kind of dorky.”

Women were not the only ones unimpressed. Arthur Kulkov stated that “I would absolutely not rock it…It looks kind of childish, like a toy. And a lot of companies have already come out with these watches. This is hardly original. I’d rather wear a sophisticated, manly watch.” Todd Snyder seemed to be in agreement, stating that “I would never replace my Rolex for that watch.”

Watchmakers’ Reactions

Apple iWatch

Apple iWatch

If the Apple Watch did not make waves in the fashion world, it is no surprise it made little impression in the watchmaking world. According to legendary Swiss watchmaker Jean-Claude Biver, “it looks a little cold, and lacks, for my taste, a bit of personality…It looks perfect, but perfection sometimes has a lack of sexiness.” Biver, like many others in the Swiss watchmaking industry, confidently stated that the Apple Watch “won’t create another crisis for the Swiss watch industry.”

iWatch Apple

iWatch by Apple

The Apple Watch is so different from Swiss-made luxury watches that there is little risk that it will make an impact. People do not buy watches like Rolex because they want a simple wristwatch. According to Paul Herzog, “people want special workmanship, lovely dials, all handcrafted, they want something that is unique to them.”

Apple iWatch Close View

Apple iWatch Close View

Others are more optimistic about the Apple Watch. According to Joe Zee, Editor-in-Chief of Yahoo Style, “what the Swiss did was marry quality and craftsmanship with precision time-telling. If we’re looking for those qualities in the digital era, that’s what the Apple watch is about. I didn’t think I was going to wear it pre-announcement, and now, absolutely, I like the practicality of it. I’m also a tech geek at heart, so for that reason alone, I would wear it.”

Though other digital watch companies may be in trouble, recent sale surges have shown that there will always be demand for the highly technical, durable, and luxurious handcrafted Rolex watches.

We would love to get your take on the Apple watch.  Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Rolex Sea Dweller

Rolex Sea Dweller

The Rolex Sea Dweller was originally developed in conjunction with COMEX, a French company that specializes in engineering and deep diving operations. In the 1960s COMEX needed a diving watch for their professional divers to use while working on deep sea oil rigs. These watches needed to be waterproof up to a certain depth to ensure they would perform properly. Rolex made modifications to their regular Submariner watch and created the Sea Dweller. By 1967 the new Sea Dweller, ref 1665, was fitted with a helium escape valve and offered for commercial sale. Sea Dweller ref 1665 was produced for approximately ten years, from 1967 to 1977.

The helium escape valve was an important addition to ref 1665. The valve ensured that helium that had built up in the watch during a dive was allowed to escape without damage to the timepiece or allowing water in. The extremely durable new Sea Dweller was capable of reading a depth of 610 meters (2000 feet) without damage to the watch. Rolex also made other improvements to ref 1665 including a thicker profile crystal and a larger reinforced case. The Oyster case features a Triplock crown and was available in stunning and durable stainless steel.

Movement Rolex Sea Dweller

Movement Rolex Sea Dweller

Sea Dweller 1665 features a caliber 1570, 26 jewels movement. Throughout its production, the black matte dial had four different dial variations, categorized as Mark I, Mark II, Mark III and Mark IV. Ref 1665 is known as the “Double Red Sea Dweller” because the dial features two lines of red text reading “SEA DWELLER” and “SUBMARINER 2000.” The “Double Red” Sea Dweller is extremely popular among watch collectors, with some versions selling for much more than a normal Sea Dweller. The dial also features tritium hour markers and an aperture for the date in place of the 3 o’clock mark.

Vintage Rolex Sea Dweller

Ref 1665 was succeeded by the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sea Dweller 4000 which can reach a depth of 1220 meters (4000 feet). The Sea Dweller 4000 Rolex reference number is 16600 and has been issued to COMEX divers since 1992.

The Double Red Sea Dweller is one of the most highly sough- after vintage Rolex wrist watches. Though initially created for divers, this watch has the right amount of style, class and functionality to appeal to a wider audience. Its fascinating history, impressive technological innovation and unique red lettering make it a true piece of Rolex craftsmanship.

However, many have noted that “new” finds are not as plentiful on the market as in years past. Rather, some collectors are securing the best examples of rare Rolex watches then not returning them to the market for a long time. This increases the demand and forces the price of many vintage and rare watches up. For collectors who own rare watches this can be a good thing and can lead to more to become available on the market in hopes of securing a higher price. Those who are looking for some of the best examples of vintage and rare Rolex watches should certainly consider visiting the Parma Watch Show at Mercante in Fiera in Parma, Italy.

In the late 80’s, Rolex released the Rolex Day-Date Ref 18239. The watch soon became known as the Men´s Rolex Day-Date “President” after President Eisenhower was spotted wearing a Day-Date. This rich and luxurious symbol of accomplishment quickly became popular among the rich and famous.

Rolex President Tridor

Aside from being the watch of a President, Ref 18239 featured automatic winding technology and a 31 jewel movement. The Rolex President was known for its precision and, with a waterproof Oyster case with a screw down crown, was also known for its durability. An added feature that was extremely popular among consumers was the addition of a date window and a day window on the dial. This made the watch more versatile, serving the purposes of time telling, day telling and date telling. The day window appears in place of the 12 o’clock mark at the top of the dial while the date window appears in place of the 3 o’clock mark. The watch’s dial has a silver finish and can feature either Roman numeral or baton time markers in white or yellow gold. The timepiece was topped with a scratch resistant sapphire crystal with a Cyclops lens over the date display for easier reading.

To make this watch even more appealing, Rolex used the finest 18k white gold to construct the case and band. Some versions of the watch feature a yellow gold accent band while others are completely finished in 18k white gold. This use of rich materials makes the Rolex President perfect for a boardroom, a fine restaurant or an elegant gathering.

The visual appeal and impressive construction of the Rolex President certainly leaves an impression of luxury and success. Rolex Oysterquartz Reference 17000A

rolex oysterquarts datejust reference 1700a

During the 1970s, quartz movements in watches became increasingly popular. Though Rolex is famous for their intricate and advanced mechanical movements, the company began researching and developing quartz movements as early as the 1950s. Rolex officially released its first quartz models with the Oysterquartz in 1977. During its production run from 1977 to 2001, close to 25,000 Oysterquartz watches were produced by Rolex. Rolex initially introduced the Oysterquartz in both the Datejust (Ref. 17000) and the Day-Date (Ref. 19018). Both models were an improvement upon the original Quartz Date of 1970 in terms of enhanced accuracy and a slimmer case design.

rolex oysterquartz reference 17000a

The Oysterquartz featured an 11 jewel movement which utilized the latest CMOS circuitry, a 32khz oscillator, and analog thermocompensation. In addition, each movement was finished to even higher standards than Rolex’s mechanical movements at the time.

oysterquartz dial and bezel

The Rolex Oysterquartz Datejust reference 17000a was available in three finishes: stainless steel (Ref. 17000), stainless steel and white gold (Ref. 17014), or stainless steel and yellow gold (Ref. 17013). This watch was also one of the first Rolex models to be fitted with a sapphire crystal. The Oysterquartz was also the only Rolex model to be supplied with a solid link integrated bracelet with no end links nor link removable screws, making it unique. Another added characteristic is the Oysterquartz’s loud ticking movement. Collectors often mention that the watch can be heard when it is quiet.

bracelet datejust oysterquarts model 17000a

Rolex stopped producing the Oysterquartz in 2001, with the last of the models selling by 2003. Rolex experts know that new 23 jewels quartz movements with a perpetual calendar were set to replace the discontinued Oysterquartz, but for reasons unknown were never produced. Thus, the Oysterquartz watch is now highly valued on the collectors’ market as a rare Rolex watch. Rolex has not yet ventured back into the quartz watch market, leaving the Oysterquartz as a valuable collector’s item.

How To Date Your Rolex

How To Date Your Rolex Watch

How To Date Your Rolex Watch

Since 1927, Rolex has issued unique serial numbers for each watch that was produced and shipped from their manufacturing studios. These serial numbers can be used to give an approximate year of production for an individual watch. However, it is important to note that all numbers are approximate as number series did not begin and end in correlation with the beginning and end of each dated year.

On each watch, Rolex has engraved a unique five to eight digit serial number and style number. Your watch’s unique serial number can even give you an estimate of when your watch was made. For example, if your watch had a serial number reading “28000” you would be able to approximate its creation date to 1926. Likewise, if your serial number read “L000001″ you could approximate your watch’s manufacture date to 1989.

Rolex Watch Serial Number

Rolex Watch Serial Number

The Rolex serial number can be located in two different places. Rolex watches produced before 2005 offer machine inscribed seven digit serial numbers on the watch case between the lugs at the 6 o’clock mark. To view the serial number, the watch’s bracelet must be detached from the 6 ‘clock side of the case. The watch’s style number is located between the lugs at the 12 o’clock mark, so do not get them confused.

Serial Numbers on Rim Rolex Milgauss

Serial Numbers on Rim Rolex Milgauss

In 2005, Rolex began engraving serial numbers on the inner rim of the watch. This area is known as the rehaut, after the French word for flange. The decision to move the location of the serial number was due to stylistic and aesthetic reasons. The style number, however, remains at its traditional spot between the lugs at the 12 o’clock mark.

Serial Numbers on Rolex Watch

Serial Numbers on Rolex Watch

By 2010, Rolex ceased following any sequential numbering system. Rather, they now engrave each watch with a random and unique identification number. Unlike the previous seven digit serial numbers, the new serial numbers are comprised of eight random letters and numbers. Before, it was fairly easy to approximate a date for a Rolex watch because Rolex followed a sequential number system. Now, watches produced after 2010 will be very difficult to date because they only offer random and mixed serial numbers.

skydweller luxury wristwatch

Today, ardent Rolex enthusiasts and collectors will specifically request certain dated Rolex reference numbers when they are looking for the perfect addition to their collections. Those who possess Rolex watches with special serial numbers can sell their watches for more money because they are worth more. Since age is an important aspect in this valuing process, Bob’s Watches can offer you detailed and useful information to assist you in dating and valuing your Rolex watch.

Are Watches Too Big?

Rolex Yachtmaster

Rolex Yachtmaster

The size of watches has dramatically increased over the past ten or fifteen years. In the 1990s, the typical size of a men’s watch was 37-39mm. There were larger watches before this, but they were typically sports watches, such as diving watches, that needed the extra space. By the early 2000s, the size of some watches had grown to 41-44mm. Again, by the mid-2000s the size had again grown from 45-48mm wide, with some being even larger! Though there is no official size being denoted as “too big” or “too small,” watch enthusiasts tend to think of a men’s watch that is 40mm or bigger as “oversized” while 40mm and under is “average.”

5 rolex watches

Watches Produced by Rolex

Why was there a sudden increase in watch size? Watch historians, collectors and enthusiasts seem to think that as watch case and dial designs became more complex in the late 1990s and on into the 2000s, the size of the watch case and dial increased to accommodate. There was also an increasing desire for the wearers to show off the artistic and decorative value of their watches. When a watch is larger it is much easier to do this. Before, traditional watches were mostly used for telling the time. Thus, it makes sense that as complications become more popular, these larger watches did as well.

Ladies Rolex Datjust

Women’s watches followed the Men’s watches trend and also increased in size. Today, a typical oversized Women’s watch measures 36-40mm wide. Nicknamed the “boyfriend” watch, these watches mimic the adoption of an oversized shirt belonging to one’s boyfriend. However, some women say they enjoy wearing larger watches because they relay dominance and security.

wrist-vintage-explorer

Vintage Rolex Explorer 1655 on Wrist

Though larger watches have increased in popularity over the past few years, the decision to follow the trend really comes down to your own personal taste. However, there are some rules that you can use to determine if a watch is too big for your wrist, according to fashion, and if you should consider opting for a smaller size. Begin by trying on the watch to see if the lugs stick out past your wrist. Consider if your wrist is wide enough to offer space for the size of the watch. Sometimes oversized watches can be uncomfortable. Be sure to move your hand around to see if the watch’s lugs poke you. If your wrist is not wide enough or if the watch is uncomfortable, you may want to consider a smaller version.

Welcome to another issue of What’s Hot & What’s Not. This month we had a number of new watches make our list. Pre-owned Rolex watch sales have been strong but some wristwatch models have been selling faster than others. If you’re curious which timepieces have been flying off the shelves and which have gone soft read on.

What’s Hot

Men’s late 1970’s and 1980’s Rolex Datejust and Date models.

Datejust White Dial

Datejust with White Dial

Debuting in the 1950s, the 1970’s and 1980’s Date models offered four key updated features that significantly changed the shape of the Datejust from its original design. For example, a new 3135 movement was built to accommodate the quick-set feature. This gave the watch a smaller profile, a new case, and new dial design. The Datejust has become the classic face of the Rolex franchise and, over 50 years after it was introduced, remains a highly sought after Rolex model. Offering durability and a sleek look, it is no surprise Date models are still in demand.

Rolex Watches For The Thrill Seekers

Rolex has long been known for their adventurous watch designs, geared towards a myriad of sportsmen and thrill-seekers. During the 1960’s, Rolex underwent an ad campaign that embodied this sense of adventure, perfectly promoting the right gadget for the job.

The Concorde

1969 Rolex GMT Master Concorde

1969 Rolex GMT Master Concorde

Rolex’s GMT-Master is a great example of this marketing strategy. Created with pilots in mind, the GMT-Master ad informs the reader that if they were to fly a Concorde tomorrow, an essential piece of equipment would be their Rolex watches. Just as a Pan Am requires meticulous attention to detail and reliability, so does the pilot require it of his gadgets. That is why he wears a Rolex GMT-Master.

Deepsea Challenger

Certainly not every Rolex wearer plans on flying a plane. However, many do take time to swim in the ocean. One of Rolex’s most popular and iconic watches, the Rolex Submariner, was specially designed with deep sea divers in mind. Their ad from the 1960’s campaign shows two scuba divers with an underwater submersible, detailing how you would want to wear a Rolex Submariner should you do the same thing. This was best demonstrated in 2012 when a Rolex Submariner went on James Cameron’s Deepsea Challenger dive to 25,756 feet (or 10,989 meters) under water. No watch has ever been to such depths, much less returned completely unharmed and in perfect working order.

Exploring Lost Underwater Cities – Rolex Submariner

A similar ad for the Submariner shows a snorkeler “looking for lost empires” underwater. Rolex has always emitted a sense of wonder and adventure. It is no surprise that they use this to appeal to the adventurer inside their customers. Whether you plan on deep sea diving, exploring lost underwater cities, or simply want a reliable and waterproof watch that has literally been to the bottom of the ocean and back, the Rolex Submariner is for you.

Racecar Drivers

One cannot discuss a sense of adventure without thinking about the association of Rolex with racing. The Formula One Grand Prix was used in a Rolex ad to inform their customers that, should they wish to wear a timepiece that offers a highly developed sense of dependable timing, such as a racecar driver would need, the Rolex Daytona is for them.

Explorers

Finally, no watch embodies Rolex’s sense of adventure quite like the Oyster Perpetual Explorer II. With an ad highlighting a figure cave diving, one immediately understands that this watch, with its distinctive and specially designed features, is tough, reliable and a valuable tool when exploring the world.

By highlighting the most extreme users for their watches, Rolex has created a sense of reliability and versatility for their impressive watch line.

rolex submariner date reference 16803

The Rolex Submariner Date 16803 was launched around 1984, but was only produced until about 1988. This particular Rolex model is special because it is one of the transitional models that introduced the sapphire crystal to Rolex watches. The 16803 also serves as Rolex’s first two-tone Submariner model.

rolex sub reference 16803

The Rolex Submariner 16803 offers a 40.5 mm by 13.3 mm stainless steel case with a contrasting 18k yellow gold bezel and screw down crown. The aesthetically pleasing two-toned look of the stainless steel and 18k yellow gold continues to the Rolex Fliplock bracelet. The watch’s dial is usually found in a striking black or blue with baton and dot markers as opposed to numerals. A square date window takes the place of the 3 o’clock marker, and is accentuated by a Cyclops lens on the watch’s newly introduced sapphire crystal.

rolex sub 16803

As with all Submariner models, the 16803 offers water resistant features. However, this particular watch offers an increase of 100 meters to the old Submariner’s water resistance rate. With older Submariner models, the highest water resistance level yet reached was 200 meters. The Submariner 16803 increased the water resistance rating to an impressive 300 meters.

rolex bracelet & clasp ref 16803

Despite its many new advances, the line was ended in 1988 with the introduction of the Rolex Submariner 16613. This model updated the 16803’s 3035 movement with a 3135 movement. This updated version went on to be produced for the next 20 years.

bezel & dial rolex submariner 16803

Transitional watch models are often produced for only a short time. Because the Rolex Submariner 16803 was only produced for 4 or so years, it makes it a rare model. Rare models watches are likely to continue to go up in value, not only as a rare example of Rolex craftsmanship but also as a piece of Rolex history. It is safe to say that Rolex Submariner 16803s do not come on the market that often. When looking for the perfect Submariner timepiece to add to your watch collection, be sure to consider the rare and impressive Rolex Submariner Date 16803.

When Hollywood stars gather together, it is a prime time for products to be advertised. Celebrities walking down the red carpet are basically walking billboards with reporters asking “Who are you wearing?” Perhaps the most expensive billboard present was E! Red Carpet host Ryan Seacrest. Considering he was on camera the entire night talking with nominees before the Golden Globe Awards, who was he wearing?

Vintage Daytona Reference 6239

Rolex watch lovers were pleased to see that he sported a Vintage Rolex on his wrist, as opposed to a more modern piece. His wrist bore a vintage Rolex Daytona Ref 6239. Dating back to the late 1960’s, this particular watch is the first version of a watch that would become a classic. The first Daytona watch got its name from Rolex’s sponsorship of the American 24 hour race at Daytona. For those new to Rolex watches, this is a vintage that will be found on most watch collector lists.

Unlike later Daytona models, Ref 6239 does not have the Oyster features of a screw-down winding crown and screw-down timing buttons. Rather, it features a Valjoux cal. 72 manual wind movement called the Rolex Cal. 722. Seacrest’s Daytona features a stunning stainless steel exterior, a white dial and black sub dials.

When the Daytona Ref 6239 was first introduced, it was not in high demand and was relatively inexpensive at only $210 plus tax. However, today they are highly collectable and can fetch high prices at auction. For example, a rare Rolex Daytona Ref 6239 recently sold for an impressive $838,090 at an auction at Christie’s. While the Daytona Ref 6239 is not the most popular Daytona model, it is certainly one of the rarest and most difficult to find and collect.

Ryan Seacrest’s Rolex Daytona Ref 6239 was not the only Rolex to grace the Red Carpet. George Clooney was spotted wearing a beautiful white gold Rolex.

Deepest Diving Watches by Rolex

When it comes to diving watches Rolex is a name that you can’t ignore. Rolex has produced watches that have descended to great depths of the ocean returning in perfect working condition. Two of the more popular Rolex watches that have stood-up to rigorous conditions include the “Rolex Deep Sea Special” and the “Rolex Sea-Dweller Deepsea Challenge.”

Rolex Deep Sea Special

Rolex Deep Sea Special 1960

Rolex Deep Sea Special 1960

Nearly 55 years ago in 1960, Captain Don Walsh and Jacques Piccard descended to the bottom of the ocean’s floor, reaching a depth of over 35,800 feet. This dive was part of Project Nekton, a series of scientific deep dives that were carried out near the island of Guam in the Western Pacific. Fascinatingly, a Rolex watch went with them. This particular Rolex, known as the Deep Sea Special, was not worn by either man. Rather, it was strapped on the outside of the Bathyscaphe Trieste! The Deep Sea Special was the most advanced watch in a series of experimental watches that were specifically designed to withstand pressure that no human being could ever survive. To everyone’s delight, the watch returned to the surface of the ocean in perfect working order, proving that Rolex is truly a master watch creator and manufacturer. This should come as no surprise. Since the release of the “Oyster” in 1926, Rolex has been studying and improving the water resistant abilities of their watches. As a result, this special timepiece greatly influenced the design of later diving watches, such as the Submariner and the Sea-Dweller.

Rolex Deep Sea Challenge

Film-maker and explorer James Cameron partnered with the National Geographic Society in 2012 to further underwater exploration with the historic Rolex Deepsea Challenge. In March of 2012, the team sent a submersible 10,908 meters (35,787 feet) to Challenger Deep, the deepest point in the world’s oceans. As they did so many years before, Rolex joined in and offered a special Rolex Sea-Dweller. The watch was attached to the submersible’s robotic arm, on the outside. It would be unprotected from the crushing pressure of the water. However, Rolex craftsmen and innovators specially designed the Sea-Dweller for the expedition, testing it and modifying it to withstand the crushing pressure. The watch performed beautifully, holding up at the greatest of depths and emerging in perfect working order. Yet again, Rolex proved that it was a master innovator whose watches lived up to the company’s claims.

Is Your Rolex Running Fast or Slow?

Rolex Watches

Though Rolex is known for excellent precision in their timepieces, every mechanical watch will, at some point, slow down or even speed up. Mechanical watches, like those made by Rolex, are regulated by a hair spring. Rolex uses a precision engineered Parachrom hairspring. Their watch movements are also COSC certified which means that the timepiece will deviate no more than -4 to +6 seconds a day.

Watch Movement

Watch Movement

There are several reasons why your watch might be running fast or slow. The variation in speed is greatly influenced by the amount of activity your watch endures. If you wear your watch on an active day, it is likely to vary from a day when your watch saw little movement, such as sitting on your dresser. Temperature, whether it be too hot or too cold, can also influence a watch’s precision.

One of the biggest impacts on your Rolex’s reliability is how often it is serviced. If your watch is running slow, it could be because it needs a good cleaning. When you have your Rolex serviced, the certified technician will take it apart, clean it, regulate it to ensure its precision, and then put it back together. It is suggested that you have your watch regulated every 2 to 7 years, or when it begins running slow.

rolex watches

Rolex Watches

If you notice that your watch is running fast, it is likely that the balance spring became magnetized. Powerful magnets can be found in a number of places, such as in some stereos and laptops. When a balance spring becomes magnetized, its coils stick together which shortens the balance spring and speeds up the watch. Though this sounds bad, it is an easy fix for a reputable watch service department. Rolex also attempts to lessen this risk by developing hairsprings that are very difficult to magnetize.

Crown Vintage Datejust 1500

Crown Vintage Datejust 1500

Aside from getting your watch repaired or serviced, there are a few tricks you can try to regulate your watch on your own. Gravity has a big impact on a watch’s precision. If your watch is speeding up, lay the watch vertically with the winding button facing down. If your watch is slowing down, lay it flat with the dial pointing up. The way the watch is positioned will allow it to use gravity to adjust the friction on the balance staff. Though these simple tricks will not precisely regulate your Rolex, they may help you tweak the watch’s precision enough to serve you until you can get it properly serviced.

Do I Need a Watch Winder?

Watch Winder

Watch Winder

Those who own quality time pieces, like a Rolex, often spend a good deal of money on them. This is because watches from Rolex or other quality watch companies are specially crafted and engineered for precision and durability. To own such a watch requires attention and maintenance to ensure it continues to serve you for years to come. One way to maintain your watch is to use a watch winder.

Vintage Case Back and Movement Datejust 1500

Vintage Case Back and Movement Datejust 1500

Before Rolex developed perpetual movements, all their watches were hand wound. Today, most modern watches now possess a perpetual movement. This type of movement automatically winds the watch when it is moved. Thus, the simple flick of the wrist will keep the watch working precisely. If you do not wear your watch every day, it could stop running while lying dormant, causing you to have to wind it when you wear it again. While Rolex has simplified the winding process over the years, some watches have complicated movements that incorporate annual calendars and even moon phases. Accurately hand winding these types of watches can be tricky and complicated.

rolex watch winder

Rolex Watch Winder

Luckily, there is a handy tool you can use to accomplish this job. A watch winder is typically a small box with a motor that is powered by a battery. The motor slowly spins a cup which holds the watch. Watch winders range in type and price. Similarly to your investment in a Rolex watch, you do not want to purchase a cheap watch winder. Inexpensive watch winders can break easily and could run too fast or for too long. A good watch winder will have a solid case and a silent motor. These nicer models even allow you to adjust the turns per day (TPD) and can even run all day. This means that if you only wear your Rolex on special occasions, it can be carefully “wound” while you are not using it, ensuring it stays accurate. Simply program how many rotations you want per day, and the winder will perform.

wrist shot vintage pepsi GMT 1675

Rolex GMT Watch

If you wear your Rolex daily, it is likely that you do not need a watch winder. However, if you are used to a quartz watch and do not plan on wearing your Rolex daily, a watch winder would be a good investment.
