When it comes to vintage dive watches, it is hard to beat the sheer stability combined with elegance that is represented in the Tudor Submariner 7928.

History of the Submariner 7928

tudor stainless submariner black bezel

Tudor Stainless Submariner Black Bezel

Tudor is actually a separate company that manufactures Rolex watches.  The pieces themselves are manufactured by Montres Tudor SA.  Original Rolex founder Hans Wildorf wanted to create a company that would create a product that as reliable and of as high a quality as the original Rolex but at a more affordable price.  Therefore, Tudor watches have always symbolized affordable quality and long-lasting wear.

The Submariner is a great example of the Tudor commitment to style mingled with practicality.  The Submariner was designed as a dive watch and could withstand pressure from being underwater without being damaged.  Here is where the true difference of the Tudor and Rolex watches becomes negligible:  Tudor watches were required to meet very strict standards of quality in order to be sold by Rolex.  In fact, the only real difference between Tudor and Rolex was the type of movements.  Tudor used a modified version of the Rolex movements but the Submariner was still required to be water-resistant to a particular depth.

vintage tudor submariner crown

Crown of a Tudor Submariner 7928

The 7928, unlike earlier Tudors, was fitted with the Rolex calibre 390 17-jewel movement.  This movement is based on the Valjoux 722 automatic. The 7928 also used an identical bezel to the Rolex 5513 Submariner.  This watch was produced from the late 1950’s until 1966 when it was replaced by newer Tudor models.

The Details of the Tudor Submariner 7928

The early examples of the Reference 7928 featured a “chapter dial.”  This means that the inner ring is printed on the dial close to the edge and connecting the minute markers.  There are actually four different dial versions known of the 7928.

No matter which dial is present on a 7928, the lower half is fairly uniform.  You should find the words “200 m=660 feet,” indicating the depth to which the watch is rated to be water-resistant.  There were also be the word SUBMARINER in all capitals and the words “Rotor” and “Self-winding” printed in curved script.  Some of the dials will feature tracks while others do not.   The Submariner also features wing-shaped protection for the winding crown which is rounded.

The Tudor Submariner is one watch that could be “faked,” so be sure to visit Bob’s Watches to find genuine Rolex and Tudor products.

Rolex Daytona 6265 FAB Movement

Every once in a while we run across a watch that is so rare that it reaches serious collector status instantly, and this week we had the pleasure of finding just such a watch.  The Daytona 6265 FAP has a unique and interesting history, having been made specifically for the Peruvian Air Force or the Fuerza Aerea del Peru. Compare this to one of more modern Daytona watches here to see the difference.

History of the Daytona 6265 FAP

Wrist Shot Rolex Daytona 6265 FAP

Rolex has a history of supplies quality precision chronographs to a variety of professionals and fields, and pilots are some of the happiest recipients of these watches.  Such is the story of the relationship between the Peruvian Air Force or FAP and Rolex, particularly in regard to the Daytona.

The FAP began in 1911, making it one of the oldest air forces in existence.  By the 1950s, the FAP was modernized and began receiving fighter jets from companies in the United States and elsewhere.  At this time, the FAP decided it was time to provide their pilots with quality watches as well.

The collaboration between Rolex of South American and the FAP may have been due to the close friendship of Heineger, the director of Rolex SA, and the official Rolex dealer in Lima.  However it happened, between 700 and 800 watches were delivered to the FAP for use by their pilots.

The Distinctive Features of the Daytona 6265 FAP

dial vintage rolex daytaon 6265

Dial Vintage Rolex Daytaon 6265

The watches used by the FAP have several similar features.  The models Daytona 6239, 6263 and 6265 were all given to the FAP, and it can be difficult to tell them apart.  The dials are all standard dials without the word “Daytona” on them; however, there are other distinguishing features that mark these as FAP watches.

The 1960s versions have the last three numbers of the serial number engraved inside the case back.  The entire serial number is duplicated in the 1970s and 1980s versions.  One of the most distinctive features, however, is the engraving “Fuerza Aerea del Peru” in black enamel on the case back.  In some cases, this black enamel has worn away and the engraving may be difficult to read.  There may also be an unique military identifier number etched on the outside of the case back, but this may have worn away over time.

Bob’s Watches is a great place to find Rolex models of all types.  Finding that perfect watch is a great feeling, but the feeling is even better when you win a free Rolex in a contest sponsored by Bob’s Watches!

Recently, Bob’s Watches offered customers a chance to win a free stainless steel Rolex Submariner watch.  This watch has been a favorite for many years for its sheer versatility and great looks.  Chris C. from Nashville, Tennessee, was the lucky winner!

The Rolex Submariner Stainless Steel

rolex submariner

Depending on the model, the small details of a Rolex Submariner Stainless Steel model can vary.  However, the basics of all Submariners remain the same.

This model features a beautiful stainless steel band that is sturdy and solid, lending a sense of permanence to this watch.  The dial of a Submariner can come in several colors but black is one of the most common.  The striking black dial and contrasting hour markers make this one of the most handsome of all the Rolex timepieces.  There is a true elegance about the Submariner that means that this “utility” watch can easily transition into other settings such as cocktail parties or dinners.

The winding crown is protected by two wings and the case is sturdy stainless steel.  The black bezel features not only 10-second interval markers but also second divisions for one through 15 seconds, making this an appropriate time piece to measure time in several different types of applications.

Depending on the year, the hands may feature a straight tip or a rounded and styled edge.  Of course, the dial will feature the distinctive “ROLEX” emblem as well as the word “Perpetual,” referring to the Oyster designation.  Submariners will also feature some set of numbers such as 1000 feet/300 meters to indicate the depth to which they are guaranteed to be water-resistant.

How The Contest Worked

Those who wanted to enter the contest simply provided their email address and signed up for Bob’s mailing list.  This allowed contestants to receive news of the latest information from Bob’s Watches on new timepieces added to the inventory as well as updates on Rolex topics and interesting blog posts about all types of Rolex watches.

Many people entered the contest, but there was only one lucky winner!  Congratulations to Chris C. of Nashville, the proud new owner of a Rolex Stainless Steel Submariner model!

Tudor 7149 Chrono

Tudor Chrono 7149

The Tudor line of Rolex watches, produced by Montres Tudor SA, appeared in the 1950s as a durable and affordable alternative to dressier Rolex models.  Despite their production as an “affordable” Rolex, the company demanded that Tudor watches comply to the same strict quality standards evidenced by other Rolex timepieces.  Tudors have become collector’s items due in part to their extreme durability and in part to their good looks that still garner attention when they are worn today.

Tudor Chrono Watch

Face of a Tudor Chrono Watch

One of the most enduring lines of Tudor watches was the Chronograph line.  Chronograph literally means “time writer,” and these Tudor watches are obviously intended as quality time keepers rather than simply being elegant accessories or durable dive watches.  Chronographs are hailed as some of the best time-keeping watches in history.

History of the Tudor 7149 Chronograph

Stainless Steel Tudor Chrono 7149

Stainless Steel Tudor Chrono 7149

The Tudor Chronograph form was introduced in 1970 with the Reference 7031.  The Tudor Chronograph is very similar to the Rolex with a few minor difference.  For one, the Tudor cases tend to be fatter and taller than Rolex cases, hinting at their utility and durability.  The original Tudor 7031 featured manual winding and two-register chronograph functions.

Tudor Chrono Watch Dial

Tudor Chrono Watch Dial

The 7031 featured a very iconic 70’s dial design that lasted through the next two variation of the Chronograph.  However, overall the original Chronograph line was not well-received, so the company altered the line in 1972.  The 71-series, of which the 7149 is the first version, featured a two-register chronograph and three case variations.

Crown Tudor Chrono Stainless Steel

The 7149 resembles the classic Rolex Daytona 6263.  It features a Bakelite bezel and comes in either black or blue versions.  The 7159 featured a solid metal bezel like the Rolex 6265 and a tachymeter that went to 500, and the 7169 featured a metal bezel that could be turned, unlike any other Tudor watch.  Early Tudor Chronographs also featured wide, triangular hands although the 7169 featured “stick hands” that gave a more streamlined look to the entire watch.

Back Tudor Chrono 7149

With the return of the Tudor brand to the United States in 2013, vintage Tudor watches are receiving more attention than in the past.  While the “Monte Carlo” designation of the 7169 is better-known, the 7149 has much to offer the vintage watch collector.  In fact, the 7149 may be more coveted by collectors due to its black bezel.

Bob’s Watches carries a full line of Tudor classic watches as well as all other types of Rolex watches.

Vintage Pepsi GMT 1675

One of the most striking of the Rolex GMT-Master watches was the 1675, produced between 1959 and 1980. Not only did this watch enjoy one of the longest production runs in Rolex history; it also is one of the most easily-recognized because of its beautiful blue and red bezel.

Wrist Shot Vintage Pepsi GMT 1675

Because the Rolex GMT Master 1675 was produced for such a long time, it is one of the easier vintage Rolex watches to find. However, many collectors prefer an earlier and more worn version than one of the newer models.

Special Features of the Rolex GMT Master 1675

movement vintage pepsi GMT

Rolex Movement – Vintage Pepsi GMT

For the first ten years of production the Rolex GMT Master 1675 featured a small triangle on the extra hour hand. This was succeeded by a red hand with a larger triangle in the 1970s and is one of the easiest identifying points in helping to date this watch. Earlier models also featured pointed crown guards as well as a chapter ring. The very earliest Rolex GMT Masters were produced with a Bakelite bezel, but the Ref. 1675 has always had a metal bezel for sturdiness and stability.

The Rolex GMT Master was the first Rolex sports watch to feature both the Oyster and Jubilee bracelet styles, and vintage Rolex examples can be found with both types of bands. The dial printing features gilt on the outer ring around the hour and minute marker on the early 1675 versions.

Back Vintage Pepsi GMT 1675

Later, when the larger triangle on the 24-hour hand was featured, the printing changed. In 1965, the company changed over to all-white dial printing from the gilt printing. In 1967, the outer ring was completely removed and the pointed crown guards replaced with rounded ones. These are very easy identifying markers in dating a Ref. 1675. The minute markers grew longer in 1969 and, in 1972, the bezel became available in all black.

However, it is the red and blue bezel that stands out in the minds of most collectors and has led to the nickname of “Pepsi” for this particular watch. Today, the Rolex GMT Master 1675 with the distinctive two-tone red and blue bezel is a collector’s item that is hotly sought after by those who want a truly distinctive vintage watch.

Vintage Rolex Explorer 1655

The Orange Hand Explorer II, otherwise known as Ref. 1655, has an interesting history.  On the face of it, this watch is no star in the Rolex lineup, especially when compared to models like the “Pepsi” or DateJust with two-tone band.  However, the Rolex Explorer 1655 shot to fame when it was worn by one very famous man and has been in demand ever since.

This model was introduced in 1971 and features either a 1570 or 1575 movement.  It also features a fixed stainless-steel bezel and is a GMT Rolex model.  The most striking thing about the Rolex Explorer is that it was designed specifically for cave explorers who, due to being in the dark for so many hours at a time, tend to lose their perspective on “day” and “night.”  The 24-hour hand tells you whether the watch is indicating 4:00 a.m. or 4:00 p.m., for example.  Rolex marketed this as a great feature for divers, spelunkers or anyone who might be in the dark for some time.

movement vintage explorer

Movement of a Vintage Explorer by Rolex

When the Rolex Explorer 1655 was first marketed, the second had was straight and unremarkable, but the extra hour hand was a bright orange, giving this particular version of the watch its name.  In 1974, Rolex added a luminous circle to further aid in seeing the time in the dark and, after 1975, the extra hour hand was painted a bright red, although collectors still refer to this version as the “orange hand” Explorer.  The watch was produced until 1985 when it was discontinued from the Rolex lineup.

crown vintage explorer 1655

Some Rolex historians disagree on the date when the orange hand disappeared from the dial.  Reference works mark the disappearance as occurring in “mid 70s” but there are still purists who argue that date.  Many claim that it is possible to find a Ref. 1655 that was made in the 1980s with an orange hand.  However, others claim that these models actually had red hands that have faded to orange, just as orange hands will sometimes fade to yellow.

Many collectors argue that the appearance of the Explorer II is problematic.  It was not popular during its 1971 to 1985 production run, with many critics claiming that the ideal is “cluttered” or even “illegible.”  However, the Rolex Explorer II Model 1655 was assured a famous spot in collections everywhere when Steve McQueen wore one during his life time.  In fact, this model is colloquially known as the “Steve McQueen” watch.

Vintage Sub 5513

This week’s vintage Rolex is the Submariner 5513.  This incredible watch was introduced in 1962 to replace the Reference 5508 and was produced until 1990.  It shot to fame as the “Live and Let Die” watch worn by James Bond in the movie of that name.  Today, it is one of the most collectible of the Submariners and, although affordable models are still found, it has increased significantly in value since 2003.

Many collectors love the Rolex Submariner 5513 because of its classic design.  It sits on the wrist easily and the dial is uncluttered and simple.  Since the Rolex 5513 was produced for nearly 30 years, there are multiple dial variations that are possible, depending on the year of production.  For example, some dials have ink traps on the hour and five-minute markers, but not all.

The Rolex Submariner 5513 was launched in 1962 and is depth-rated to 200 meters or 660 feet.  It has an 8 mm crown and gilt printing on the dial.  The 1963 version featured a non-chronometer movement and a Swiss T<25 printed on the dial.

The next update was 1976, when the word “Submariner” was printed above the depth rating.  The dial was updated again in 1984 with gold markings around the minute and hour markers, but the 1988 version featured an even bigger change, with Sapphire glass.  This is the last official Submariner version of the watch before it was replaced by the introduction of the 14060 model.

  • The matte dial 200M with small equals sign
  • The matte dial 600M with open 6
  • The matte dial 600M with open 6 and serifs on the hour markers
  • The matte dial 600M with open 6 known as the “maxi dial”

The earliest examples of the Rolex Daytona Cosmographs are now 50 years old, making them rare collector’s items by any standards. The 1963 line of watches was originally titled “LeMans,” so you may be lucky and find advertising that sports this name with a picture of the Daytona. However, the name soon shifted and the Reference 6239 Cosmograph became known officially as the Daytona.

vintage daytona movement

Vintage Daytona Movement

The biggest differences between the 6238 that preceded it and the 6239 was the use of inverse colors for sub-dials. All the previous Rolex chronograph dials were one color. The tachymeter scale was moved from the dial to the bezel, as well. Bezels on these early watches were graduated to 300 units per hour, a trend that lasted until 1967. The earliest Daytona was marked at 275 and hashed the entire way around the bezel. Finding a 1963 Rolex Daytona with the 275-marked bezel intact is a rare find, indeed.

vintage daytona clasp

Vintage Daytona Clasp

Very early Daytonas will not feature the word “Daytona” on the dial but instead have a small underline or hash mark under the words “Rolex Cosmograph.” There is no word from Rolex on the meaning of this underline, but theories abound. Some believe that it is to signal the transition from radium to tritium for luminous dials. The 1963 model also features two “Swiss” signatures, one at six o’clock and one farther down on the dial.

vintage daytona crown

Vintage Daytona Crown

The hands are different on the sub-registers than on the counters. Minute and hour counters are thick and pointed, while the sub-register hands are very thin and feature a flat head. Finding a Daytona this old with the original running seconds hand is also a great achievement from a collector’s point of view.

vintage daytona back case

Vintage Daytona Back Case

It is very difficult to find the earliest Daytonas. In fact, you can probably plan on spending many months in your search if you are a purist about original parts. Be sure to deal with a reputable dealer so that you are not fooled by a sharp sale into buying a less valuable watch. The watch should have a serial number under 1,000,000 and should feature a Valjoux 72B movement. The price is almost impossible to predict. As one expert said, “Everyone who knows what these are already has one.”

rolex submariner stainless steel 16800

Made famous by Timothy Dalton in his role as James Bond in License to Kill, although the watch is only glimpsed throughout the movie, the Rolex Submariner Stainless Steel 16800 has become a classic timepiece with an attitude.  The Rolex watches worn by Sean Connery, George Lazenby and Roger Moore sported much more of a dressy look, but Timothy Dalton’s Rolex was the first to include the magnified bubble for the date on the sapphire crystal.  Interestingly enough, Dalton was also the last Bond to wear Rolex due to a long period of dormancy in the movies over legal battles.  By the time Bond was allowed to return to the screen, the world had moved on and the designers felt other brands were more modern and appropriate.

face rolex submariner 16800

No matter what the makers of Bond movies think, however, you rarely find a better classic than the Rolex Submariner watch collection, and the stainless steel 16800 is one of the finest of this class.  In fact, the 16800 was a harbinger, sharing much more in common with modern Rolex watches than the early Bond styles.  Furthermore, the 16800 is a great vintage buy, with price points just a little over a new Submariner.

History of the Submariner

submariner 16800 bracelet

The earliest waterproof watches were created by Rolex for divers and others who needed waterproof timepieces that were easily seen underwater.  They featured easy-to-read numerals that would show up in dim light and a waterproof case that resisted water pressure to 100 meters.  Later, advancing technology allowed Submariners to resist water up to 300 meters or nearly 1,000 feet.

submariner clasp rolex

It would be hard to imagine a Submariner more “typical” and possession most of the best features of the line than the 16800.  This watch has it all and is the epitome of Submariner technology, including:

  • Easy-to-see numerals and “cathedral” hands with fatter end points to assist in reading the watch underwater.
  • A unidirectional bezel with markings for the first fifteen minutes and five-minute hash marks through the 60
  • A large winding crown with crown protectors to avoid damage from bumps
  • A sapphire crystal that provides clear, easy reading of all dial elements
  • The bubble date window, designed to help you read the date easily in low light and maintain a distinction between the time and date functions

The Submariner Reference 16800 remains an iconic and beautiful example of the perfect, simple Rolex that works almost anywhere.

The 4130 Caliber movement provides perpetual self-winding for those wearing these watches.  With fewer components than traditional chronographs, the 4130 is considered extremely reliable.  Coupled with the great Daytona engraved tachymeter bezel specifically designed for racing drivers, this watch can measure speeds up to 400 units per hour.  The sub-dials count 1/8 of a second, minutes and hours respectively.

This watch comes in several metals, including yellow gold, steel and yellow gold, white gold, Everose gold and steel.

With all of these great features, it is no wonder the Daytona has become a classic and one of the best-selling watches Rolex has ever produced.  The 18K Gold Daytona is a wonderful watch for formal wear, although many owners also pair it with less formal clothing.

The hits just keep coming in Basel at the new Rolex watch unveiling, with the GMT Master II with Cerachrom “Pepsi” bezel in a white gold case and band.  This new GMT watch comes on the heels of the GMT “Black and Blue” bezel, Reference 116760.  Those in the know with Rolex brands anticipated the release of this particular timepiece and feel that this watch may be an even bigger hit with fans of the Rolex brand.

What Is Special About the Red And Blue GMT Master II?

New 2014 Rolex GMT Master II with Pepsi Bezel

The truly unique thing that sets this watch apart from all others is the incredible red and blue bezel.  This ceramic, trademarked as Cerachrom, is the first material to be made in two colors.  Rolex was able to perfect this material and create a beautiful two-tone ceramic bezel that was the first of its kind.  The first Cerachrom bezel was produced in blue and black, but the blue and red process is also incredibly intricate.

2014 GMT master II pepsi bezels

2014 GMT Master II Pepsi Bezel

The red color is particularly difficult to make because no stable pigment exists to make the ceramic component.  However, through some secret process, Rolex was able to cement this pigment in the Cerachrom bezel, resulting in the iconic blue and red appearance.  According to information from Rolex, the entire bezel is made in red then half is changed to a blue color by impregnating the night time section with a solution of chemical compounds then heating it to 1,600 degrees Celsius.  This gives the ceramic its resistant properties and permanently seals the colors.

The Pepsi bezel also features engraved numerals with a fine platinum coating that enhances readability.  The white gold case is one of Rolex’s finest, and the case still measures 40 mm with a white gold Oyster bracelet featuring polished center links.  The Rolex Caliber 3186 powers this incredible watch.

Rolex GMT is one of the most well-known and well-loved of the Rolex lineup, so this watch’s enthusiastic reception at the Basel show is no surprise.  While the red and blue bezel may not be everyone’s choice, its incredible colors, combined with the beautiful black dial, white numerals and hands and oversize winding crown with crown protectors is bound to appeal to a great number of people.  This Rolex is certain to turn heads no matter whether you wear it as a formal watch or a fairly casual piece.

2014 Rolex Sea Dweller 4000

Basel 2014 is off to a great start with the unveiling of the Rolex Sea-Dweller 4000.  This stunning new timepiece features a 40mm case, a black ceramic bezel and a helium escape valve.  Unlike previous models such as the Submariner, this watch is rated to be resistant to water and pressure down to 4000 feet or 1220 meters.

This watch also features a new bracelet with the Rolex Glidelock & Fliplock clasp features.  With the Rolex Caliber 3135, this reinvention of the Sea Dweller is a fascinating watch.

History of the Sea Dweller

sea dweller dial

2014 Sea-Dweller 4000 Dial

Following in the tradition of the great Submariner, the Sea Dweller was first issued in 1967.  It was discontinued in 2008 in favor of updated models, but the resurgence of interest in this watch as a result of this new model may change that.

The Sea Dweller has a rich history of standing up to the demanding environment of deep-sea diving.  The COMEX or Compagnie Maritime d’Expertises carried the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sea Dweller on the Hydra VIII mission.  Marine engineers the world over turned to this model for reliable timekeeping for many years.

Characteristics of the Sea Dweller

side view rolex sea dweller 4000

Side View Rolex Sea Dweller 4000

Very similar to the Submariner at first glance, the Sea Dweller sports a beautiful black face with easy-to-read numerals and hands.  The Rolex crown sits atop the words Rolex Perpetual Oyster with Sea Dweller/4000 feet/1220 meters below the hands’ pivot point.  The unidirectional bezel is hash marked at every minute rather than just the first fifteen, and is surmounted by a diamond at the 12 o’clock point.  A small date window replaces the older “bubble” model and is easily visible with contrasting black print on a white background.

The wide winding crown is covered by two crown protectors and the beautiful stainless steel strap is made of wide, sturdy links for a heavy and dependable look and feel.  The watch features a helium escape valve that keeps water from reaching the interior and gives the watch its amazing dependability against submarine pressures.

In fact, the Rolex-patented helium valve makes the difference in allowing the Sea Dweller to reach such huge depths as 4000 feet, or three-quarters of a mile below the surface.  Having been the premiere watch associated with the conquest of the deep, the Sea Dweller’s new reincarnation promises exciting times ahead for marine lovers.  Perhaps the new Sea Dweller is the beginning of a new era of super water-proof Rolex watches.

Crown Rolex Military Sub 5513

The Rolex watches made for the Royal Navy have a special place in many collector’s hearts.  These 1970s versions, of which about 1200 were made, are in high demand these days, so if you are lucky enough to find one you want to know what to look for.  Experts estimate that only a few hundred remain in their original condition, as many of them have had parts replaced or have been destroyed over the years.

The dial on these Military Submariner watches are the typical 5513 dial with a modified large “T” in a circle above the “200 meters/660 feet” markings at six o’clock.  The “T” indicates the presence of tritium.

Submariner 5513 with Strap

The hands of this model are unique and are referred to as “sword” hands.  The Omega Seamaster has similar hands and people sometimes use Seamaster hands to replace these, but a good collector can tell the difference.  Because of their large surface area, the hands are prone to flaking.

The bezel may include an insert with markings all the way around.  This was a special bezel made only for military Submariners. The case is a typical 5513 but the spring bars are affixed with metal bars to the NATO-type strap, and the caseback has an MOD number beginning with 0552 or W10 on it along with a triangle with a hat on top below the issue and year numbers.

These caseback numbers are quite different depending of the delivery date and must be compared to other watches in the same delivery sequence to verity their authenticity.  A few watches were delivered with Mercedes hands, and some with 15-minute bezels, so identifying the right reference can be difficult.

Movement 5513 Submariner Rolex

In order to keep the 5513 and 5517 Military Submariners, straight, it is helpful to remember:

  • The 5513 was delivered with either sword or Mercedes hands and either a full 60-minute or a 15-minute bezel
  • The 5517 can only have sword hands and a full 60-minute bezel.

Looking for a Submariner 5513 Military issue is not a quest to be taken lightly.  It will probably require months of searching, and you have to decide if you are willing to take one with different parts as many have been modified over the years.  However, owning a piece of history may be well worth the extra effort and waiting for just the right watch may be rewarded with a great find!

green submariner 116610

Green Submariner 116610

When Rolex introduces the first of the upgraded ceramic bezel models of Submariners, the world sat up and took notice.  The white gold 116619 and the two-toned 116613 debuted prior to the all-stainless Submariner, which made its first appearance at Basel in 2010, but it was some time before experts were able to review the 116610 with improved and enhanced features.

Improvements Make The 116610 a Watch to Watch

Green Submariner Box and Papers

In some ways the 116610 is a great improvement over earlier ceramic bezel models.  For one thing, the black ceramic bezel fabrication process has apparently been improved since the black seems to be much truer than other Cerachrom bezels, such as the one on the GMT Master IIc.

The dial is also improved, with larger markers and bigger hands as well as larger lugs and crown guards.  Rolex is apparently going for a much richer and heavier look with this watch, although the case remains at the standard 40mm diameter as earlier models.

rolex submariner bezel and dial

Submariner 116610 with Green Bezel and Green Dial

This watch also added an anti-reflective coating on the date bubble crystal, making it much easier to see the date from every angle.  The links of the bracelet are also upgraded to solid stainless steel rather than hollow links.  The new clasp has been praised for its versatility and appreciated by wearers in all fields.  While the watch is still considered a “tool” watch, the deployment elements of the clasp are polished, making it much more attractive.  Best of all, the Glidelock clasp allows for simple fine adjustments and obviates the need for a dive suit extension, unlike previous Rolex watches.

wristwatch clasp submariner rolex

Submariner Clasp

Some modifications stayed the same with this model as they were already working well.  For example, the pigmented Super Luminova glow that makes the hands and markers stand out in the dark remains, and the blue color is said to be more visible underwater than the old green color.

Rolex 116610V

Rolex 116610V

This watch also retains the Rolex Caliber 3135 inside.  This 31-jewel caliber has been upgraded, however, with a new Parachrom Bleu hairspring that is completely anti-magnetic and highly temperature- and shock-resistant.  The case is still water resistant to 1000 feet or 300 meters.

One area of the watch that has received criticism is the movement.  Some complain that the movement lacks refinement and technological prowess; however, it does exactly what it is designed to do, which is to function under high pressure and in water scenarios, so it is hard to take these criticisms too seriously.

Comparing vintage and new Rolex watches is always difficult, but with the Submariner, we might say that Rolex took the watch from “great” to “fantastic” with this new model.

daytona 116520

Daytona 116520

The Rolex Daytona 116520 was introduced in 2000 at the BaselWorld Fair. This watch represented the first completely new in-house movement that Rolex had designed in more than 50 years: the fully-integrated self-winding chronograph function called the Caliber 4130.

rolex daytona 116520

Daytona 116520 Bracelet

This Caliber was the result of years of development and was designed to improve accuracy and reliability of the Daytona. Experts were enthusiastic, even though most of the changes that occurred took place inside the watch rather than outside and those who did not use the watch for its intended chronograph purpose might not even notice the difference.

On The Inside

daytona 116520

Daytona 116520

One of the biggest interior changes to the Rolex Daytona 116520 was the use of a vertical clutch mechanism that couples its movements to the indicators of the watch when activated and is often preferred to the lateral clutch movements used in most watches. The 4130′s new clutch design offered something highly valued in watches used as chronographs: precise stops and starts of the seconds hand. This makes the Daytona the perfect “stopwatch” for timing delicate processes, including racing.

clasp submariner 116520

Clasp Submariner 116520

The smart design and features were also upgraded on this Daytona model. The greatly simplified counter, for example, integrated what was formerly two separate mechanisms into one unit that occupies less space. This freed precious space inside the watch so that Rolex could increase the mainspring barrel size, allowing the watch to run longer, as well as the size of the balance wheel to improve accuracy in timekeeping. In fact, the entire watch was simplified, with 12 screws versus more than 40 in earlier models and 20 percent fewer parts than previous watches.

On The Outside

daytona 116520 dial

Daytona 116520 Dial

The exterior of the Daytona 116520 is very similar to that of the 16520. However, there were some subtle but important changes made, including moving the seconds indicator from 9 o’clock to 6 o’clock and aligning the hour register with the 30-minute register.

Wider and luminous hour markers, slightly longer lugs and polishing on the top side of the case instead of the brushed finish are all features familiar to Daytona users that will strike a resonating chord with this watch.

While the Daytona 116520 has made some changes from its earlier incarnations, it is hard to deny that this watch continues most of the favorite traditions of Daytona, including the great chronographic functions and the beautiful appearance that have made this watch a favorite for years.

vintage 5512 submariner rolex

Vintage 5513 Submariner Rolex

Once in awhile, you come across an extremely rare version of a watch that is already considered a collector’s item.  This is the case with the vintage Submariner 5513 with gilt dial.

movement 5512 rolex submariner

Movement 5513 Rolex Submariner

The 5512 Submariners are relatively rare items to begin with, especially when compared to the 5513.  The four-line 5512 is the most commonly known because of its association with Steve McQueen.  However, the dial configurations on this watch make it almost one of a kind.  Compared to this Submariner, the McQueen watch is relatively common.

gilt dial rolex 5512

Gilt Dial Rolex 5513

Interesting dial configurations and case modifications make both the 5512 and 5513 watch unique.  As shown, this version (5513) has the following attributes:

  1. It is an early model 5513.
  2. The dial printing is gilt, which means that it is written in gold font rather than white.
  3. The depth rating is written as meters/feet rather than feet/meters.

The vintage Submariner  5512 is not a watch you will find just anywhere.  In fact, the chances are good that you will only run across one for sale in decades rather than months!  However, the rarer the Rolex, the more satisfying it is when you finally find one!  The 1962 Rolex Submariner 5512 will sell for around $64,000 at auction.  The 5513 isn’t that bad either fetching prices upward of $30,000.  The watch’s rare features make it a class find for all collectors, so it is not one that can be purchased at a low price.

If you want a Rolex Submariner model that is easier to find and has an interesting history, you may want to set your sights on the 5513 rather than the 5512, or on a 5512 from another era.  However, if you do happen to want the 5512, and are prepared to wait for your chance to own it, this watch could be the Rolex find of a lifetime!

Rolex Reference 16613 Submariner Watch

The Rolex Submariner 16613 has been replaced by the 116613, but the original is still a valuable collector’s item.  In production since 1988, the 16613 was released as a continuation of the two-tone Submariner line that began in 1984 with the 16803.  The 16613, another two-tone model, was released alongside the 16610 which was completely stainless steel.

116613 submariner watch

Rolex Reference 11613

The dial on the 16613 was a very iridescent color, unlike the solid color of the new 116613.  Further, the new watch boasts a “Maxi dial” while the original had slimmer hands and smaller markers.  The 16613 also had narrower case lugs and crown guards than the new watch and lacked the date magnification bubble that makes the date easier to read.  Probably the biggest difference is the bracelet, which was composed of hollow links in the 16613 but is now all-solid links in the newer model.

Pricing History

The 16613 Submariner retailed for $9,300.00 just before discontinuation.  Despite substantial upgrades, the 116613 retails at only a slightly higher price at $10,400.00. You can view the steady appreciation of the Rolex 16613 in the graph below.

Stainless Steel Sub 1680 Prices

Many collectors prefer the 16613 to the newer 116613 in terms of appearance.  The older watch is slimmer and more proportionate than the “super size” newer watch and the sunburst color dial is one of the most fascinating ever made by Rolex.  Some also point out that the old watch’s clasp withstood wear far better than the single, polished piece of metal that is now being used as a clasp for the 116613.  While the new clasp is nice and shiny, the old clasp was more resilient.

rolex 16613

Rolex Submariner 16613

The Submariner is a line that has brought a great deal of attention to the thing Rolex does best:  make watch interiors.  While the exteriors are what gets seen and talked about, the bottom line is that the interiors are what make the watches work, and the Submariner has the very best of Rolex technology.  Submersible up to 1,000 feet or 330 meters, no one has ever topped the sheer dependability of Rolex Submariner design.  This is one reason why these watches were chosen as dive watches for the Royal Navy.

While the beautiful 116613 is a triumph of innovation and no doubt represents a great deal of effort on Rolex’s part to keep up with the times, the old 16613 is hard to beat in terms of beauty, dependability and stability.  Many collectors will want to hang on to their 16613 models as long as possible!

A Discussion of Rolex Movements Going Back to 1950

rolex daytona 6265 fab movement

Rolex Daytona 6265 FAB Movement

There’ve been at least 61 Rolex calibres manufactured since 1950. And they’ve been installed in many times that many references. In fact some have been installed in dozens of references. The 2235, for instance, was introduced in 1999 and has seen service in no less than 108 different Rolex references, all of them versions of the Oyster Perpetual, Datejust and Lady Yacht-Master midsize. (For the record, calibre means movement, and reference is the model number of the watch.)

Rolex actually first presented a date display well before 1950. The year was 1945, and the calibre was the 740.

A day-date display – actually a day-date-moon phase – first appeared with Rolex’s calibre 780 in 1952. Rolex installed the 780 in their ref. 6062 chronograph.

The Day-Date ref. 6511 (or “President” as the model came to be popularly known) debuted in 1956 with calibre 1055 beneath the dial. The President is the watch made famous by Lyndon Johnson (ref. unknown). There are also reports of Dwight Eisenhower wearing one. However, there is no evidence of this. Instead, he wore a Datejust, Rolex’s 150,000th certified chronometer, which the company awarded him in 1951 for his distinguished service and leadership in WW II.

The “quick set” feature on the Day-Date, allowing rapid setting of the date, debuted with calibre 3055 in ref. 18026 in the late 1970s. The “double quick set” calibre 3155 was introduced in 1988. The 3155 allowed rapid setting of both the day and the date by turning the crown clock-wise or counter-clockwise while in position 2.

Besides the flagship President and its history-making calibres, other notable calibres included the 1030, 1530, 1036, 1565, 1575, and 2030.

movement 5513 rolex submariner

Movement 5513 Submariner

The Oyster Perpetual began life with the calibre 1030, in 1950. This calibre was also used in several Submariner and Explorer references, 65xx and 66xx.

Calibre 1530 appeared in 1957, succeeding calibre A.260 in the Submariner and was used in Sub references 5512, 5513, 5516, and 5518. A Submariner with a date came on the scene in 1967 with a calibre 1570 beating away inside.

vintage rolex 1675 movement

Rolex 1675 Movement

The GMT is the watch originally developed jointly with Pan American World Airways. It came to life in 1954, ref. 6542 with calibre 1036. In that calibre, the GMT hand was directly connected to the hour hand. The wearer set the second time zone by rotating the bezel. Ref. 1675, which used calibres 1565 and 1575, was the first with a GMT hand able to be set independently.

The smaller calibre 2030 and its derivatives have been used in the Lady Oyster Perpetual, Lady Datejust, Lady Midsize, and Lady Yacht-Master. The 2030 first appeared in 1970.

Rolex Daytona Pink Gold

Rolex Daytona Pink Gold

There are few watches made that can match the Dayton 116505 for sheer good looks.  The entire watch just breathes good taste.  This lovely Rolex Cosmograph with black dial is one of the most stunning watches ever made by the famous watchmaker and is probably the most elegant in the Daytona collection.  Known as “Everose” due to its lovely, rosy sheen, the case and bracelet in rose gold of this incredible timepiece.

Retail Pricing History for the Daytona 116505

Retailing at $37,450, the Everose case measures a standard 40 mm.  Over the last decade this model watch has seen some serious appreciation as far as retail value is concerned. You can view the pricing in the table below.

Year 2008 2008 2010 2011 2012
Retail Value $30,700 $30,700 $32,050 $34,700 $37,450

Case

The reference 116505 case is created from a block of 18K Everose gold.  The triple waterproof crown and patented case closure hermetically seals the works from water up to a depth of 100 meters or 330 feet, making this one of the hardest-working watches in the Rolex collection.  Only the Submariner has better depth rating, and, like all Daytonas, the 116505 also functions as a sophisticated stopwatch.

Bracelet & Clasp

Rolex 116505 Daytona Bracelet

The genuine Rolex Oyster bracelet with Oysterlock clasp in 18K rose gold is a stunning addition to the beautiful case and face of this watch.  This bracelet was introduced in the 1930s and is fairly universal as the Rolex standard.  Known for durability, comfort and beauty, the bracelet is protected by a dual security system in the clasp that keeps the watch fastened securely to the wrist.

Movement

The interior of the watch is no less impressive.  Powered by a caliber 4130 jewel movement, the watch is perpetually self-winding. The Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute or COSC certifies the movement.  Not only is the watch self-winding but the inner workings are made from the very best of Rolex technology to function for years without problems.  Because of the intricacy of the jewel movement, Rolex can create a watch that measures up to three separate time sequences, all in a very small and convenient size.

Dial

This watch also features a black dial with index markers and a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.  The bezel is 18K Everose gold with a fixed engraved tachymeter scale.  The watch can accurately measure speeds up to 400 miles per hour, which, along with the Chronograph sub-dials, has lead to its reputation as a racing watch.  The chronograph functions allow wearers to measure up to 1/8 second while also measuring hours and minutes.
